"Jellybean 4.1.2 update"

(Hangs head) As I knew you would be Thom you are right, I didn't have issues after the FDR on my Bionic. I will ask this though, should I wait for the official push of JB or go ahead and do the FDR now? That would mean I have to do it twice when the real thing comes out.
 
There is enough complexity with the official releases. I don't know how good any unofficial release is.

If it hasn't been released then by definition doesn't that mean it has bugs that are still being worked on?

I think your strategy should be based on a simple principle ... assume the official release followed by a Factory Data Reset will work properly. Assume an unofficial release with or without a Factory Data Reset will not work properly.

(For the second one you might be surprised ... I bet you aren't.)

I'm real close to FDRing my Maxx currently. It's been so slow... But I'm hoping 4.1 comes out soon so I don't have to FDR twice.
 
You should factory reset after any update, just just major updates. I would just Wait till the ota comes before you do it so you don't have to do it again
 
So the way I am understanding everyone, is that you download JB when it is released OTA and then do the FDR right? Just want to make sure I am understanding what everyone is talking saying here about the FDR. But wouldnt that erase the update and you have to re-download ICS and then jump back up to JB? Sorry if I am asking a dumb question I am just trying to understand everything.
 
You are correct. Do the update and then the Factory Data Reset.

In the process you will not touch the system but you will loose all the apps that you added to your phone and all the data customizations ... including pictures, videos, contact lists, customizations of apps, ... and you will have to reinstall them.

For apps from Play Store they can just all be reloaded rather quickly.

For contacts ... what do you use?

(It is great that you asked BEFORE doing it.)

The JellyBean that I am on is the one from Christmas. The accidental release. So I guess I should do the FDR twice? Once now and then again with the official and hopefully FINAL release.
 
@Thom Little I use the backup assistant that came on my MAXX. One other question while we are talking about it. Would it be a good idea to take my SD card out so it doesnt erase all my pictures that is on that? that is where all my pictures are saved and not on the phones memory.

What tablet do you have? I have seen people posting that the Galaxy Tab 2 was getting JB 4.2, I wouldnt mind having that for mine but it keeps saying my tablet is up to date.

The update should not touch your data.

The Factory Data Reset should erase your data and apps from internal memory and not touch your SD card,

What I do ...

- I trust no one.
- I have nothing on my phone I am not prepared to loose.
- I have nothing on my phone that will allow someone else to steal from me.
- I backup both cards to two folders on my Workstation through a USB connection.
- My contacts are in Google. The master copy is on my workstation. I download the contacts from my workstation to Google and they are then reflected on my phone.

I just received my update. I'll do the factory reset then really play with it.

Tip: Under settings, About Phone, Droid Version. Keep tapping on Droid Version until the window opens. Rub the jelly bean. The floating jelly beans will keep kids occupied for awhile. You can drag them around on the screen.
 
Hi All,

I was wondering if i will have any problems with the OTA jellybean update if my phone used to be rooted. I unrooted recently after i uninstalled some of the bloatware. I just want to make sure i am not going to brick my phone when the OTA update comes

If you deleted bloat, that could cause the ota to fail. It depends on what the update script calls for in terms of patching current bloat.

I haven't tried downloading it yet as I'm waiting until after dinner so I can devote enough time to it. :)

EDIT: Just tried to update and says "no update available at this time." According to the tweet, it's coming out in "stages" so I'm not sure if its a regional thing or what.
 
Just an update for anyone with the current release....I am having issues with my ringtones working for my text messages. I have yet to do an FDR so this is a warning to all that think it's a pain in the butt. Seriously trust in doing the FDR to avoid any issues after the update lands on your phone. I will be doing one later tonight. One question....how do I take a screen shot??
 
I installed the soak test version earlier and it went very smooth! I have one question though, I thought the Motorola clock widget came with JB,but I can't seem to find it anywhere?
