"Jellybean 4.1.2 update"

Several have asked on this thread about the differences between ICS and JB, so here's the nutshell version.

Visually, it's very similar to ICS. The main improvements are some UI smoothing/performance gains, easier drag-n-drop of icons and widgets, and Google Now (though I believe you have to manually enable it through the Settings in the primary Google app...I did, anyway). There's a new camera and keyboard in JB 4.2, as well, but those weren't included in the OTA that just pushed out (it was 4.1.2). You can get them in any number of places, though, with minimal searching and effort. Some of the features of the camera don't work with the DRM, but I still like it better than the stock 4.1 camera. The keyboard appears to be trying to compete with SwiftKey and Swype, but IMHO it still seems a bit primitive in comparison.

Hope that helps!

Happened to receive my replacement phone on Monday, downloaded the OTA update that evening, did a FDR and everything is running really smoothly (so far). I'm taking it easy reinstalling apps. Hopefully by going slow I'll be able to identify if one or more apps causes the problems I was having.

Appbrain is a great app to backup your app list.

I used to use Appbrain to do batch installs of updates, but that aspect of it hasn't worked for me in quite awhile. It's unfortunate.

did an FDR last night per the vzw warranty return "diagnostics" (my main speaker blew a couple months ago and im returning under warranty.

initially after the JB update i did not do a reset and my phone was working great. butter smooth, fast, overall much improved. battery life was also better. now after doing the reset my phone randomly speaks droid (my notification) but i have no messages, voicemails, emails, etc. im not new to this phone. now...it has since stopped doing that but is randomly vibrating 3 times for no apparent reason. nothing looks out of place when it happens using watchdog.

oddly enough (probably due to the random vibration every few minutes) battery life has since gotten worse than it was on ICS.

it has done the vibration 3 times (9 in total) while writing this post. sometimes it will go 30 minutes between happening.

OK, yes I could disable Juice Defender to allow it to do what it needs to do but the problem with that is it's in the middle of the night whenever it wants to do the back up. And I will look into the Veriizon website and see about turning that off and hopefully it will turn it off on my phone and make the apps go away.

Would it be better to erase you storage then load jellybean. Like using the RAZR utility?

Since loading the update must keep leftovers from ICS. Just thinking using the utility would remove all that and start with a clean slate.

I think it is pathetic that we have to reset our devices back to stock after each major update or they will not work properly. Is this all devices, or just Moto?

I can't speak for all of the Windows versions, but I believe Microsoft started doing this with Windows Vista...

It can't be disabled using the phone. I already tried that first. And I'm not rooted so that wouldn't work either. Someone said that they did it on the Verizon website and I don't see a way to do it, that's why I was asking.

1. Log into Verizon Wireless
2. From the "My Verizon" menu, Look under "My Plans and Services" and choose "Change Features"
3. Choose your phone and then choose the "next" arrow
4. From the list of options, deselect all of the options that say "Backup Assistant"
5. Using the "next" arrows, navigate through the menus and then confirm your changes
6. Backup assistant should now be disabled

I just got the 4.1.2 update two days ago and I am in disbelief. Under the same normal use as before, what used to be a 14-20 hour battery life is now around 5.5! I use battery monitor (paid) and carefully track the stats, and the usage patterns has not changed. Nor has the distribution of programs which use battery life. THe only thing I have left to do is the factory reset. Which I cannot stand... but lets hope that will be the fix. In the upgrade to ICS I lucked out and never had to reset.

My first day with GB produced HORRIBLE battery life....so....I did a reset....and now, so far, it seems to be working much better. still not sure IF it's as good as i was getting in ICS (3-5 days on a charge), but i'll know more in a day or two here.

Thanks for the help. I got it taken care of. But I now have new phone envy as I just added my wife and father in law to my plan and they have S3's. I'm in real need of the Note 2 because of some of it's features. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait a bit.

I finally got the update. I forget how to activate the Swype- like keyboard. I've been using it on my Nexus 7 and love it. I've been using Swype on the phone and hate it.

Any thoughts on this?

It wasn't included. Google is your friend, the .apk is available if you search. ;)

Swype is on mine... at least in text messages. Just bring up the keyboard in a message or anywhere you're typing and drag down the notification bar and press change input method.

I've been using Swype on my phone and I hate it compared to gesture typing that came standard on the Nexus 7.

I installed the gesture keyboard and activated it in settings. Swype is still activated and I can't uncheck it. The check box is grey. I also see no way to uninstall it. When I type it's defaulting to Swype.

How do I stop Jelly Bean update? The notification keeps poping up, I do not want the update. I am not rooted nor do I even know what that means, sorry, I am new to the forum. My phone works just fine and I wish to keep my tethering ability which I am told goes away when you do the update. Please help, many thanks. Cold in New Hampshire

There is another spot you have to enable it. Just above where you activated it there is a grey box where you need to choose it. It's a pain, but you'll get it.

My phone is really lagging after the update. I'm probably going to have to do a reset, but I don't know when I'm going to have the time. I work 7 days a week. I know from past experience it takes time to get everything back the way it was. Crap.
