Root Jellytime GPS non-existant - baseband issue?

Hi folks, as discussed in another thread I have issues with several roms completely failing to get any GPS data. Even the GPS icon won't appear in the status bar. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue because some roms still work absolutely fine.

I was mooching around XDA on this issue when I noticed someone mention that baseband versions may affect GPS compatibility. Is this worth a look?

Mine's "12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M"... mean anything to anyone? I'm obviously worried about bricking my phone, so any help would be appreciated.

I've always had issues with GPS on non-Sense ROM's.

Not sure about basebands, but there is discussion on speeding up fixes here.

I couldn't get a fix at all and then I editted the gps.conf file, as per instructions on the linked XDA thread, and hey presto... I could use GPS again :)

Did your system recognise that it had gps at all when you had that issue? ie icon in the status bar blinking but not getting fix? I'm thinking mine may be a more driver/service level issue as I'm not even getting that. I never have much problem getting a fix with jellytime r23, but with jellytime r28 it's as if the phone no longer has gps at all.

Yeah... mine just went on searching. If you are having a problem with it searching in the first place, it could be hardware related. The GPS anntena is where the flash housing on the phone is. I've certainly heard that people have had issues with that before.

In work at the moment... will have a look when I get in to see if I can find you some info :)

Thanks mate! I have soldered in a bit of wire as a new GPS antenna (as per XDA forum suggestion), it now works extremely well under r23. Better than my tomtom used to! Gets a lock in 5 seconds tops.

r28... nowt. I even went outside and stood under a brolly for a while, but the GPS icon in the status bar never shows up. GPS test and Maps won't even look for a signal.

That sounds then, like a bug with that release, if it's working on a different version of that ROM :)

My gut says CM10, on which both affected roms are based, has recently dropped support for my old basebands/drivers, or maybe an update in the kernel has done the same.

If not, I'm stumped. I wouldn't mind too much being stuck on r23, but I do like some of the features in r28!

From reading too many forum threads here and on xda it would seem that different radios do work better than others on different ROMs etc etc. Trouble is this adds another layer into the equation to test and, I for one, can never normally be that ar5ed .... Mine is actually "12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.1_M" which, from memory, is the latest radio for the DHD. Think it came from the xda thread on DHD radios.

Good to hear you got everything sorted out. Pretty useful information since this is a unusual issue problem and the fix is not what I expected,

Good news. Which radio did you flash in the end?

Dave

12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M

CAUTION: anyone trying this, be EXTREMELY careful what radio you use and how you do it. I have no experience with this (only flashed radio this once) but I believe the slightest glitch leaves your phone useless except as an elegant solution to a wobbly table.

I tried this, but it didn't work. I'm going to check the antenna next, but if that's not the solution, what do I do then? Any ideas at all?
