Root JL4 / ODIN Help Needed

I must be doing something wrong here.

I'm trying to install JL4 from this thread
[ROM] JL4, build date 2010.12.17 - xda-developers

I have Odin 3 1.70.

I have the JL4 .tar file.

Samsung drivers are installed.

I take out the battery, then put it back in, then hold vol+/vol- and hit power and I'm in system recovery screen.

The last entry on the phone says installing muti-CSC.

I then connect the phone to the PC and it recognizes something on Com3. I then load the tar file in the pda section of ODIN. I'm not loading the PIT file.

When I click start, odin says file analysis, then setupconnection, then nothing else happens after that.

I don't need the .pit file, right? If I use the .pit file, does that erase the programs and data that I had stored on the phone?

Help?

I guess i need the samsung drivers.. Odin didnt recognize my phone. Where can i get those?

Oh and i thought you just held the volume up & down button? Not the power?

Some key notes:

1) flashing via odin, you need to be in download mode, not recovery.
-Download mode: Start with phone off. Hold down volume up/down at same time, don't touch power, then plug in usb cord(other end connected to computer, and your computer should be on).

2) If you flash JL4 using odin, you won't be able to root using update.zip, unless you modify recovery 3e. For this reason, try flashing using clockwork manager, someone was nice enough to modify the recovery 3e and inclue root.

Right.....did that, didnt recognize my phone so i guess i needed drivers on my PC. I should be good now. I dont really want to flash with Odin. Just use it to take me back to stock. But, it never hurts to know how to flash using Odin either.
