Juice Defender Ultimate for Tbolt

I downloaded the Juice Defender Ultimate. I went to the option disable apps. I disabled the bloatware apps. Does this really freeze or disable the apps? what is the deal with the Juice Defender? does it really work?

I believe the options to freeze/disable the bloatware will not work unless you are rooted. I remember seeing Juice Defender mentioning that in various places of the app.

The app itself does work in principle. It basically turns on and off your data connection when you aren't using your phone. The Ultimate version, amongst other things, provides you with additional profiles. I believe it turns it off/down at night when you are asleep and so on...

I was using the free version for awhile, not sure I noticed a difference, but maybe. I got rid of the app when I found Tasker and was basically able to set up an abbreviated version of what Juicedefender does with tasks.

Anyone who knows better, please chime in...

But Juice Defender turns on and off your data connection according to different profiles. The default is just going to turn it off when the screen is off and turn them back in after a set period of time in order for your apps to check and resync.

Airplane mode, I believe is going to disable all radios. So, its sorta doing the same thing, but you'd have to manually turn the Airplane mode off. You could also just put the Power Control widget on your desktop and turn off mobile data and auto-sync when you don't need them.

I don't do any of this, but I use Tasker to basically simulate JD. I set a rule to turn off sync and data when the screen goes off, then after 15 mins it turns them back on for like 30 seconds to check, and then turns off again.

Wouldn't putting the device in airplane mode do the same thing as JD then? Why need an app?

I use Green Power, which is similar to Juice Defender.

What they do, as far as I understand, is turn off wi fi and 3G/4G when the screen turns off, but it (Green Power and, I believe JD) will turn them on and sync for one minute, every 15 minutes (or you can configure it for more or less frequently)

That way, while your phone isn't syncing all the time when the screen is off, it still does check for email, etc. while the screen is turned off.

Also, I believe with Airplane Mode, you wouldn't receive phone calls, as airplane mode turns off ALL radios. With GP and JD, you'll still receive all of your phone calls, and all SMS messages. You won't get emails the minute they arrive, but you will get them within 14 minutes or less.

They also check to see if, for example, you're currently downloading something when the screen turns off, and they won't disconnect you until the download is completed... again, something you wouldn't have by simply turning on Airplane mode.

It's a VERY elegant compromise, unless you absolutely need to know as soon as possible when any email arrives. I've found my battery life with Green Power (and, previously, with Juice Defender) to be much longer then without them.

Your mileage may vary....
