Root Just a basic question

I'm going to root my DHD and have a question.

Will everything stay on my phone? I've got so much stuff I wanna keep, some of it is the only copy of things. I'm pretty sure I will keep it all, but I just want to check before I go and try it.

Yep, everything will stay as it is.
Rooting is just a superuser permission, it doesn't delete anything.
Now if you were to flash roms etc, then you'd lose things. (just like you would with a factory reset)

Cheers dude :) i thought it was the case, but just needed to double check things with someone that knows :)

I heard that someone got SuperOneClick to root a DHD on 2.2.1 so I was gunna give it a bash :)

Nope, you can't do that, 2.2.1 stops rooting... unless this is a very new development!
You'll need to downgrade to 2.2.

Really?? Atleast there's a tut on that kicking about that I've seen, should be easy enough.

Any risks I should be aware of before starting?

Not really, i only started rooting & rom-ing this week. Flashed 2 roms already. (currently on [ROM] CyanogenMod-7 for Desire HD & Inspire: V7.0.0-RC2 (08/03/2011) - xda-developers - gingerbread. Works great & i've got extra features)
I was totally legit until now (had my dhd since oct last year); official 2.2 & then ota 2.2.1.
Fortunately my dhd came unlocked & unbranded, so i didn't need to do the goldcard bit.

Just follow the instructions carefully!
I'll keep having a look here in case you've got any questions.
Possibly send you some of the files you need - the small ones, as the roms & stuff are close to 100MB

Had mine since Jan, don't wanna cock it up :\
So if it doesn't root it'll just work the same as before?

May well look into CM6 or 7 once I've had it rooted for a while. It's the one everyone seems to talk about the most

Shouldn't do, if rooting fails it'll just freeze or whatever. Restart your phone, uninstall the rooting app & you should be back to normal.

Downgraded to 1.32.405.6 using this XDA thread after backing up all my bits and bobs with Backup Master and exporting all my contacts to the SD card.

Was going to root the phone to remove bloatware, but the unbranded ROM does that anyways..... now I just need to decide if I REALLY need it

If all you want to do is remove the bloatware, then i think most of it can be done using apps & settings with SU access.
I liked stock 2.2.1, ran & performed well in most areas, but i wanted bluetooth support which it lacked.

Now i'm on CM7RC2, wouldn't go back.
Not only do i get my bt support with this rom, but i love the gingerbread minimalistic look & functionality, it very smooth & reliable.

Make sure you get the lastest version though, the previous version had a battery bug & flash bug.

However, i heard htc will release gb for the dhd in the summer, & i suppose this will have the same feel & function as what i've got now.

Can you wait?!?!

I think I'm going to wait for 2.3 then cos I wanna know what its like legitimately... If I don't like it I can always flash a custom ROM ;)
