Just bought an eris!

So ya, my enV touch broke so I figured it was time to upgrade to an android phone. I bought a used eris off craigslist and it has the latest firmware. But I do have some questions. What are the best apps to manage battery life, I have the advanced task killer but I also seen an app (can't remember the name) that lets you control your CPU speed so for example when my phone is locked the cpu can be made to run slower using less power. And also, is there anything I should be aware of about the droid eris?

the CPU app is called SetCPU, which only rooted users can use. I would suggest rooting the phone since it really lets you optimize the phone to your liking. Some roms will come with built overclock and minimum CPU speed scripts that you can run so you dont need SetCPU.

as far as managing battery life, i would suggest just t get all your settings right (animations, brightness, email pull, facebook pull, all that good stuff) then see how your battery life does. Look over on the XDA forum for info also.

You need to root the phone in order to install an app like SetCPU, the Overclock widget, or CPUBoost to alter the processor speed (though most rooted ROMs now are set up to do that without these apps.)

You should also stay away from advanced task killer, by the way, at least to run on a schedule to kill processes. It does't actually save any battery unless you happen to have a runaway background process running, but that rarely - rarely - happens. See this: FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android

you should have saved a little longer and bought an Incredible.. what did you pay for the Eris?

+1
unless you got the Eris for next to nothing, you over payed. It is quite old and has been last years technology practically since the day of its release.

That being said, you have the Eris now and it is not by any means a bad phone. Especially if you are coming from a feature phone.

I would suggest rotting it and putting a froyo (2.2) rom because they tend to be much faster and make the phone much more functional IMO.

My battery life got better after I rooted my phone, so I do suggest rooting. Plus it gets rid of all the Verizon bloat ware.
