Just Got a New/Old hero as gift... vs? 1.5+

I want to upgrade to 2.1, (right?... not the more recent 2.2 or 2.3?)

Where can I find/get it?
(I'd figured it would naturally be listed somewhere in my hero)

and this is so I can use the Z4root... pkg.

Kensington or Sandisk get class 4 or above.

I had to download the official 2.1 update through the HTC website. You won't be able to get 2.2 or 2.3 until you're rooted.

Just to take a step backwards and make sure everything's cool and we're all on the same page, here's some history for you. welcome to the Hero:

Sprint officially released 1.5, 1.6 and 2.1 for the Hero. Like DonB said, you can run the Sprint RUU to upgrade to 2.1 ( the RUU is a .exe file that you can download here Sprint - Software Downloads - Smartphones - HTC Hero with Google , it's software version 2.27.651.6, there's link to some instructions as well, if you stay with this version, sprint may "over the air" update you to later versions of 2.1)

Sprint neither released nor intends to release any further Android versions after 2.1. so to get 2.2 (which the developers declared stable as of early Decemberish), or 2.3 (which developers are still tweakin, but is stable enough that people are starting to use it as their daily driver) you have to look to the development community.

so these guys are giving instructions and recommendations to leap right in to 2.3.

in all or this, the number one rule is to make a nandroid before you flash (i.e. install) anything! a nandroid is a complete backup of you ROM, your apps, data, kernal, everything in the phones internal memory. to make one, after you've followed steps to install ROM manager and recovery, boot into recovery and select 'nandroid' then 'backup'. your ROM manager stores this nandroid on your SD card (and it's recommended to store them elsewhere too, like your computer, just to be safe/paranoid). ROM manager can always restore the nandroid once you've booted into recovery. never rename a nandroid. i like to keep a text file handy, on the computer and in ROM manager's backup folder, in which I describe the characteristics of each nandroid i've made (e.g. which ROM it is and any other other data I'm tinkering with, apps or kernals or whatever)

Couple of clarifications:
-I don't believe that Sprint ever relesed 1.6 for the Hero, not that it matters. LOL
-It is actually ok to rename nandroid backups, as long as you do not put any spaces in the file name. But making a text file with the details is probably easier and safer.

And know going over same and similar info twenty times with a "me" type as well as many many others pre me can be a real drag. And it can't be any fun at all keeping track of the little things especially...
and all that without the ability or liscense to blow off steam with a few hot comments to the dolt (me), and so thank you "all" again.

Yes. From the home screen go: settings > about phone > software update (of something like that, I haven't seen 2.1 in a while)

well... later versions at this time don't exist. but as soon as google releases a new version, if the development community is still kicking strong for the Hero, it will may developed and you may wanna check it out. That's where I am right now. I'm quite happy with 2.2, but now there's a 2.3 out there, so I may have to tinker again :)

By "these guys" I meant the people in this forum. Sprint does not want you using 2.3, in fact rooting the phone, which enables any of this, voids the warranty [see the first sticky thread in this "all things root" forum http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...g-guide-updated-5-32pm-est-nov-24-2010-a.html for more info]

Nope. Stuff it in there. When you install ROM manager, and eventually make a nandroid, ROM Manager creates the folders that it needs.

No sweat. There's been a quite a few new additions to the Hero rooting/rom'ing community in the last few weeks. (I'm one of them! It's only been 6 or 7 weeks since I rooted for the first time.) If you look around a bit you'll find several "first timer" type threads, where people like you were walked through it for the first time. I'd bet that if you went checked within the last four pages of threads in this forum, you'd find a couple "new to rooting" type threads.

By when in doubt, never fear to ask away!! You'll notice that it's extremely rare that thread doesn't get a reply in this fine Hero community.
 
I'm involved in a group plan...
and the current username@sprint.com isn't mine....
once rooted etc... how will this be effected.. if at all....
Can I change it... to mine...
if not.... well ok,
but can I make sure it doesn't show on texts, calls, blueprints etc etc etc

okay, i'm sort of in the same boat as stocky, i'm good with pc's brand new to android, although i love learning about it, it's very exciting to me all possibilites. anyways I have a one main questions,

Question 1.) I was given a sprint hero, i flashed it myself for talk text and web successfully, i am running 1.5. what would be best to upgrade too firmware and rom wise, can i do 2.1 and then flashh it again for cricket, or can i do the 2.3 gingerbread and then root it, and then flash to cricket? or some revised order of those actions (upgrade to 2.3 then flash then root? etc.)
Question 2.) Is changing your roms and upgrading firmware strictly performance enhancing, or aesthetically better looking, or a little of both? my uncle has a droid x with froyo and it's amazing, i'd like to get my hero closer to that.

my end goal is to have a faster more efficient hero...a superhero if you will..lol sorry that was cheese. anyways, my email is andymcballer@gmail, but i'll keep checking back. thanks so much to all the guru's for being so helpful to us guys who are pc saavy but totally new to android . thanks a million.

Okay after rereading several times I got the answer to most of my questions, just one thing I'm trying to learn, does carrier (i use cricket which is similar to metro pcs if you haven't heard of cricket) affect what type of root process I have to do, or what roms I can and cannot use, please oh please I really have read so many different forums and posts and threads.

I would be thankful and pass it on to others who need it.

But I'm begging you guys now, please please please, right now with cricket my Sprint hero has talk text and using a proxy shortcut I have web,but only thru the stock browser and no apps or aftermarket browsers will work, I finally found someone who had a solution I can't remember if it was here or at the xda forums. So my question is can acustom ROM overcome. This and has anyone seen a thread regarding this?

Please don't ignore me, I'm not trying To hijack this thread but I made my own new thread and I got no answer, someone just redirected me here and said everybody is always willing to help, but for the most part everybody has been ignoring me. And I know it sucks dealing with newbs ssuch as myself but PLEASE we all have to start somewhere..please help
 
NO The Carrier Shouldn't affect to root process.
Has long as the Phone is the same Sprint Hero = CMDA Hero - I beleive Criket Hero is also CMDA -

Z4root should work fine for you.Root intstall ROM managet and Flash Alternate Recovery at the VERY bottom of the menu.

JUST Noticed you are running 1.5....I would Recommend Universal Androot....
I think DON has a link in his Rooting Library....

I don't think it is a case of not wanting to answer the same question again, or ignoring you, I think two issues: It was a weekend, kind of a busy weekend for many, (which means not as much time for the forums!) and add to that, the fact that most of the members on this forum are not familiar with Cricket...but very familiar with Sprint... I suspect many just didn't have an answer for you. Better to not answer than give you bad info. :)

Anyway, it sounds like MaholoCat and BTK gave you some help.;)

FYI, its easy to insert a hyperlink here. Copy the desired URL, then type a word in the compose a text message box... then select/highlight it. In the tool bar right above the text entry field, just to the right of center, there is an icon... looks to be a blue circle, with a black and white oval sort of thing at the bottom. Click that, then past the copied URL into it. HTC

sweet thanks man, that's a lot easier lol learn something new everyday:D
 
The reason I ask is because it is a sprint branded hero, then using cdma workshop and qpst I reprogrammed the phone aka "flashed" (which is what its called in my region and is common for cdma heros because cricket is a no contract. Unlimited talk text and 3g web for 45$) on this phone after flashing to cricket your data only works through the stock web browser using a proxy, I read either here or on xda that there was a Rom or a radio or something that would allow me to utilize the 3g and have it power my apps and market because right now it doesn't, I have the evdo logo and i can use the stock browser but that's it no apps or market. also the mms is made available by flashing a modified telephony.apk , so I know there is away to do this. what I'm asking is where can I go to learn more about this. I want to have my phone fully functional all thetime. not only in WIFI. please one of you senior members must have cone across this somewhere before.


So I'm asking this to you guys, Mahalokat, srkmagnus,jb, btk apple... I would really be so thankful and would gladly enlighten others.
