and even though I looked at 2 dozen root tutorials, I'm still scared shitless about breaking this thing. Is there a really really simple way to do this? I know PC terminology, but not Android. I'm coming from an NV Touch

Depending on if you have received the latest update there is a link and videos in one of the stickys. I would suggest the manual method. It really is not very hard just lots of copy/paste into a command prompt and waiting. If you are on the latest update then I would suggest waiting until the manual method is updated to link to the correct files but I have seen suggestions that the method has not changed just different files to push to the phone

I got my Thunderbolt two weeks ago. Updated to the 7/8/2011 OTA. Still, the Verizon bloatware irritated me, so I decided to root, to delete it.

Well, I wasn't able to flash the OTA jcase ROM on my first round. probably my error.

But, I flashed DasBAMF 1.8.6 and the OTA 7/8 radios, and it worked well. So, that's what I am on until new hotness comes down the line.

My interests are balanced performance with battery life.

I even tried to flash improperly and got the warning triangle, but pulling the battery got me back up and running, and I tried again. Eventually it all worked. Follow the docs exactly, including the downgrade RUU, and you'll be fine.
