Root Just got the MT

After debating between this and the OV, I finally bought this. I'm hoping to install a custom ROM on here, so I have a few questions.

Which CM7 ROM is the best one out there? I heard a lot of good things about sharp's?

Once CM9 is completed (one that works with the camera), how can you upgrade from CM7 to CM9? Do you need to revert your phone to factory settings first?

Tried the GPS, and waited about 30 seconds at most, but it has not locked yet so far. Installing a custom ROM such as CM7/9 would help?

Thanks!

I would go for g60madmans cm7 build. Incredibly stable. I used it for a long time.

As for cm9, you would boot into recovery then flash it like you will do with cm7. Head to the stickys on how to root and rom your phone, and enjoy the triumph!

welcome to the triumph and the forums!!!

you can use cm7, i would suggest reloaded if you go with cm7, i am currently running sharp 2.2.2 stock, and i must say its the best rom i have seen yet, it is off a varient of our device and the drivers seem to match, this rom is 100% running and nice and smooth and fast... also. devs are in process of making the sharp 2.3.5? run on triumph my understanding is its 100% working except for the cell network. the triumph is very easy to rom so good choice, if its a used phone you may want to test out and make sure nothings wrong with it prior to romming, saves time for you and the dev's.

Welcome to the MT! If you'd rather stay on the stock ROM, there are ways to make the poor GPS performance better- just do a search of the "All things root" forum for "GPS fix"- many of the custom ROMS either have this fix already applied or don't really need it (some of the ported Froyo ROMs like the Sharp or U9000 have excellent GPS out of the box). You can also use apps like GPS Status available on Google Play to help get a good initial lock if you want to stay stock for a while. I think the stock ROM gets a bad rap- I used it for a long time and it's not bad, especailly if you root, get rid of the VM bloatware & flash an overclockable kernel like Umph or fOCK- fun stuff!

Anyway, enjoy your phone and if you have issues, just search or ask on the forum- chances are, it's happened to someone else before! :)

by sharp 2.2.2 you mean this (http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...harp-rom-2-2-2-triumph-updated-7-15-12-a.html) ?
why use a froyo ROM when there's gingerbread? does it perform better?

Triumph is one of the easiest phone to root/flash.
Once you get hand of it, you will be reflashing your phone 4 times a day like I do.

Good point to start:
day 1: root, install CWM, make a nandroid back up (always!). http://androidforums.com/triumph-all-things-root/455603-guide-rooting-your-motorola-triumph.html
day 2: stick to the stock, remove bloatware, apply gps fix.
day 3: flash froyo based rom (Sharp or U9000). Sharp is a bit different, install your fav launcher, it will grow on you. U9000 is more usual. Check A-GPS in setting and be prepared to be blown away.
day 4: flash CM7 (no hdmi, do you need it?) Play with it, test run it, run your fav apps, see how they run and if you a comfi with everything. It has Talk with video support and some overclocking tweaks.
day 5: flash Starship. It's another CM7 ROM with few tweaks. Does it feel smoother? GPS locks faster/slower? How is camera working for you?
day 6. flash CM9 (no camera, do you need it?) It's pretty, isn't it ?
day 7: go back to your favorite.
Run it till you find annoying bug and repeat all 6 steps all over again till you find a perfect rom.

day 365: after 1034 attempts you are building your own rom and you're happy with it.

Yep- that's the one! The main reason to use a Froyo ROM at this point on the MT is that none of the CM7/CM9 ROMs (that I'm aware of) have the HDMI out working. Not a big deal if you will never use that feature. Many of the CM7 (don't know about CM9) ROMS also have minor issues with video playback. I'm not a dev, but from what I understand, since Motorola didn't release the source code (or all of it) for the MT, the devs have had a tough time coming up with Gingerbread/ICS drivers that work with the MT hardware.

Also, I think almost all the CM7/CM9 ROMs allow CPU overclocking by default from within the system settings, while most of the Froyo ROMs (including stock) require you to flash a new kernel capable of overclocking and install an app like SetCPU (sounds scary but really very easy).

I'm picky & am holing out for a CM7/CM9 ROM that has HDMI working, but with that being said, Gingerbread is nice! The ICS ROMs available additionally do not have a working camera at this point.

It's so easy to flash a ROM on this phone once you get the hang of it- might as well try several to see which you like best!

Love the "7 Day Plan" Izzard- you just need to add "if bootloop, then see day 1" afetr each step & it'll be perfect! :D

So the sharp 2.2.2 (or other Froyo) are the only ROMS that have every part of the phone working?

First off, welcome to the MT and welcome to the community :)

I believe everything was working with CM7 which is Gingerbread, I have it on my old triumph and I never found anything that didn't work.

It also has great battery life. The GPS issue is (in my opinion) the only flaw that the phone has.

It is a very good phone and I loved it while I used it. I still use it from time to time for internet browsing.

And as mentioned, g60madmans cm7 is a very good rom.. it is the one that I have on my MT and never had any problems.

how many different CM7 builds are there? why are there different builds?

The first release was TickerGuy "CM7 TickerGuy Edition". He sold his phone and moved on and Whyzor took over with "TG Reloaded". After Whyzor sold his phone I took over and released "CM7 g60 style". After battling the CM7 code I stopped developing CM7 and Chairshot215 took over with "Re-Stock - Triumph Stock Re-Imagined" and then "Starship Triumph 1.7". Right now Chairshot215, dsmryder, and myself are working on CM 7.2.0. The goal of that project is to make the most stable and solid release of CM7 possible for the Triumph. It's faster, better and works great but is still in Alpha right now and not released yet. Also if you look around there is tons of variants of all these versions of CM7 where other developers on the board modified the ROM's and themed them.

It doesn't have as many features to tweak as say CM7. However it is more stable as everything works like HDMI and Video Playback with out flicker. It's a give our take when you root your phone and load a ROM. CM7 is a great ROM and works well but it's not forever one. However it's the best Gingerbread ROM we currently have on the Triumph with working 3g/sms/mms built from code. Check out MIUI as well, even though it's not built from code it's still a great Gingerbread ROM.

If we can get HDMI working in 7.2.0 it may change the playing field for best ROM until CM9 and or CM10 can get a working camera/hdmi. Like all things it takes time and the effort of developers to make things better. And since our developer community is still very strong it's just a matter of time! Welcome to the community :D

Just installed Sharp 2.2.2!

What are some good themes you guys are using? I'm really looking to customizing my phone now! Also, I remember coming across it somewhere while searching posts, but can someone give me the name of the app used to overclock the CPU? Thanks!

BTW, here are the steps I followed in case anyone wants to do what I did:

http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...stalling-cwm-custom-rom-motorola-triumph.html

The above to install CWM, backup nandroid.

Then you download the Sharp 2.2.2 zip from http://androidforums.com/triumph-al...harp-rom-2-2-2-triumph-updated-7-15-12-a.html

Copy the zip into your SD card.

Go into CWM and wipe your data/factory reset and dalvik cache (under advanced)

then install the ROM using the instructions in the first link!

Works so nicely! It even comes with a FM radio (that I haven't gotten to work yet :p)

Absolutely the easiest, it's basically pre-rooted, all you really have to do is flash a custom recovery and the su binary and your done. When I switched to the Evo V it took me a little while longer. ;-)

I have to weigh in for MIUI Build 2.4.20. This is based ONLY on the fact that is has simple features that I personally like. Features such as a centered clock in the status bar, an option to set the status bar to transparent, no app drawer and there is a plethora of themes available.

I flashed g60madman's CM7 and thought it was very stable. I have also tried CM9 and really wish the camera (sorry for beating that dead horse ) was working. I also have tried MIUIv4 ICS Port which will be/would be my daily ROM if the camera was functioning.

I am posting a screenshot because I really like how clean the home screen looks.

Ultimately, I think all the Devs in here do an awesome job!! I wish I had one tenth their abilities so I could tinker like them

That's correct- HDMI and the cameras seem to be the sticking points with a lot of non-Froyo ROMs. I think we'll get there- just seems like the last 5% of the work is taking 95% of the effort for the devs...

May I ask where you got that wallpaper from?

MIUI is my personal all time favorite however I am currently using sharp for two reasons 1: it is one of two roms to support agps mode (relied on heavily for work) and 2: it still has functioning HDMI ( I like to game on my TV with the sixaxis controller)

If someone cranked out those two features in MIUI I'd jump ship and NEVER look back

MIUI is great ROM, don't get me wrong. The idea behind primarily suggesting 3 ROMs (Sharp, CM7 or Starship) is the support from developers. They are here, they will look at the problem you have and they will try to fix it.
we have many, and I mean really many different ROMs to choose from. Try them all, they all are pretty sweet, fun to play with, some have some awesome customizations. The problem is when you find some annoying bug you're basically stuck with it.
I see people digging old threads on the forum about ROMs and Kernels just to report the bug and find out that the ROM is abandoned.
