Root Just got this phone...tried to root...I'm stuck

G33kyG1rl

Lurker
I need a little help. Please bear with me. I'm a computer tech and have lots of experience with rooting my previous phone, the Motorola Droid 3, but had surgery recently and the medication they have me on has me a little, we'll say, distracted. My Evo was just activated today, and I tried the unlock and root technique, but I think I only succeeded in unlocking, not rooting. I've seen lots of threads pertaining to this, but I'm having so much trouble following, I feel like a child.

Also, my phone keeps trying to do a system update, but when I tell it to install, it restarts and TeamWin recovery pops up and says:

E: Bad boot message
"TIME"
Finding update package...
E: Unknown volume for path (then the path, which I am not typing all of, LOL)
Installation aborted

Can anyone put this in to idiot terms for me, and break it down, so I can root my phone? I'm going nuts here with a stock phone with bloatware out the wazoo. Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like you've unlocked and installed teamwin custom recovery

Time to backup and flash superuser or supersu

I didn't really wish to have the custom recovery, this phone is so much different than my D3 was. I'm not really a custom ROM type person, I just want a phone that doesn't have all the extra unnecessary crap on it. If I knew how, and were coherent enough, to revert back and start all over without doing all of that, I would.

Well, if you want to remove programs that are built into the system, you'll need a custom recovery so that you can (at a minimum) flash a superuser zip file. You can't mess with the /system partition without being root.

You don't have to install a custom recovery to add root. Many people don't. You can simply boot the recovery through command prompt using a fastboot command. It never has to actually be installed on the phone.

This allows you to install super user and still keep the stock recovery. :)
Although, if you are deleting the bloatware, the OTA will likely fail anyway even with the stock recovery. Best to just "freeze" the bloatware in your case, so that you can unfreeze to take an OTA if the update fails.

Head here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

Get the .zip version toward the bottom of the first post (1.25)
Put that on the sd card. fastboot boot recovery.img then install that zip through recovery. Should have root access then.

If you need to verify, just download ROOT CHECKER from the play store.

If you want the stock recovery, I can post it up for you and you can flash it back to the phone through fastboot.

Well, here's my predicament now. I never finished rooting the thing, I never got into the phone, and the service sucks at my house. I'm going back to my Droid, and selling this phone to a friend. My question is, HOW do I do a restore, since I have the custom recovery?

The best way to return it to stock will be to run the ruu. Have you taken any of the ota updates?

Depending on what version your phone is on will determine what steps are involved or if the ruu is unavailable to you.

Can you use fastboot to run the command: fastboot getvar all

And then paste that information here?

Or you can tell me your hboot version and we can work from there...

HBOOT version is 1.57

Cool!! Go ahead and download the RUU from here: Goo.im Downloads - Browsing ruu

I'm assuming you never did the wire trick for s-off? If you are s-off, just run the ruu and that's it. If you are s-on, continue below.

While waiting for that to download, download this file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/100923173/SetMainVersionLOW.zip

Put that on your sd card and flash via recovery.

Now you will need to relock your bootloader to run the RUU. Do this using fastboot command: fastboot oem lock

Once the bootloader is locked again, just leave the phone connected to the pc in fastboot usb mode. (Basically don't touch it after locking the bootloader)

Run the RUU on your pc and follow the prompts. Should take about 10 minutes to complete and everything should be returned to stock.

Piece of cake, right? LOL NOT! Wow! Seems pretty complicated. I realize I got myself into it though, by starting something I didn't care enough to finish!
