You would use the second download in this post :
xda-developers - View Single Post - New Eris ota for those that want to pick it apart
I haven't tried it, so I can not vouch for it. (Also note the direct IP address - I don't even know if the download files are still there any longer).
You need to be absolutely certain of the software version number you are starting with; note the two different versions available in that post. Whatever you do, you should make a nandroid backup before you begin.
doogalds advice will also work, but that will "wipe the slate clean", whereas the OTA style install is an in-place upgrade.
Finally, I should mention this: the July OTA (v 2.37.605.4) had excellent standby battery life - as good as the Eris gets, anyway. I'm not sure what you mean by "run time"; if you keep the screen on full time, you'll be lucky to get 4 hours out of an Eris. OTOH, a well-configured stock Eris that is idle, and also in a strong signal area, will only use a few % of battery life every 6 hours.
good luck,

I have performed the update using the second zip file download created by gnarlyc in the post named by erisuser1. But there were some niggly details I wanted to flag. Perhaps I did something wrong, or perhaps these are known or unknown minutae that don't matter.
The exact procedure is:
0. Verify that you've got the appropriate files handy to re-root the phone after you're done with the update. Root is lost in the update, but re-rooting works just fine.
1. Download the proper zip file. For me it was:
http://46.4.208.146/OTAs/OTA_2.41.605.6-2.37.605.4.zip
2. Move the file from the download sub-directory to the top-level of /sdcard
(Otherwise the AmonRA recovery won't find it for the Flash zip from sdcard step 5 below.)
3. Verify the MD5 checksum using ScaryAlien's Android File Verifier. Learn about it here:
https://sites.google.com/site/scaryalienware/afv
I couldn't find an MD5 checksum published for the file. I did 2 downloads, one on the phone, and one to a computer and got the same MD5. Since it seemed to have worked, the proper MD5 is probably:
8675dbd4e1f0c9d90f45d37a61a51904
4. Shut down the phone and boot into the AmonRa recovery.
5. Select "Flash zip from sdcard" to do the deed.
The update will take a few minutes. It spends a WHILE in "Patching system files", but when it's done it will say it was successful.
6. Boot the phone.
Here it spends a few minutes in the VerizonWireless screen. I guess it's rebuilding a dalvik cache or something. Others had flagged this, but I thought that because I was using the file from gnarlyc it wouldn't happen to me. The first boot-up takes extra long no matter how you get this update.
----
Once the phone was running I checked to see if the phone was still rooted. gnarlyc generously chatted with me on IRC, and said he expected root would be preserved. But alas it was not.
So I re-rooted the phone. I used the Universal 1-click method:
http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/139178-universal-1-click-eris-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html
I verified that the Software number had gone up to 2.41.605.6, so indeed the update seems to have been successful. However, I was surprised to then get an alert offering to give me the update! I don't understand why, if the update has all the relevant bits, that the phone would still perceive the need to take it.
I worked around this by pressing the button to take the update.
The phone rebooted into Amon RA, as well documented elsewhere, the checksum was rejected, and the update aborted, but thereafter the phone stopped asking me to take the update.
So to summarize:
1. The "Flash from zip" using the file created by gnarlyc seems to succeed.
2. It takes a few minutes in the install, and in the first boot-up.
3. The phone will have to be re-rooted.
4. The phone will keep asking you to take the update you now have until you accept it, and let it fail to install under AmonRA.
This last item, why is it so?
Kudos to erisuser1 for doing so much hand holding and to gnarlyc for making the file.
