Help Just installed new update 6.7.246, ver.4.04

and right after that I was asked to install 98.72.22. What is this and is there anything negative about?.....Don't wanna push my luck! lol:)

How is this new 6.7.246 working for you?
 
98.72.22 is Jelly Bean (JB)
6.7.246 is Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)
prior was Gingerbread (GB)

The Bionic world is in the process of upgrading from ICS to JB.

GB was riddled with bugs and we dealt with them for about a year. It was a VERY unstable environment.

ICS corrected almost 100% of the remaining bugs and was a welcome relief and has been very stable.

JB has been out of less than a week. It has some incremental improvements to ICS and a few problems.

I think the user who is un-root-ed and not trying to tether with a third-party app will be quite happy with JB.

Since you are now on ICS you can never revert to GB.

When you update to JB you will not be able to revert to ICS or GB.

The 98.72.22 is Jelly Bean (JB). You weren't kidding in the other thread where you mentioned the previous owner didn't use the phone much :)

And while Thom is right, there is not a way to get to Gingerbread (GB) from ICS, a way has been discovered to go from JB back down to ICS. However, this requires switching a file and using FXZ to update to JB and should only be done in case you are ever wanting to preserve root. If you have no interest in rooting, you don't need to worry about it.
 
My recommendation is even if you are not root-ed you should follow a strategy that will allow you to root in the future. This is "keeping your options open".

I root-ed my Droid X after upgrading to the Bionic. My reason for waiting ... when I signed up I said I would not root.

That's why I rooted under ICS, unfortunately it failed to keep root. Just wish one of Samuri's testers had discovered the way to go back to ICS from JB before I took the JB update, but oh well, can't have everything.
 
Thanks guys for your help. I think I'll stick with the ICS for a while since the JB hasn't been out long. No, my phone is stock and not rooted.

Thom when you say " not trying to tether with a third-party app", do you mean like Pdanet?

I was referring to apps like FoxFi for hotspots without Verizon.

FM Radio is available in ICS and for some reason absent in JB. (I used to have to listen to a local news station that was not streamed on the Internet and used it often.)

Thanks for that info about FM Radio, I believe I'll stick with the ICS for now.

Yep, Dan finished it and Samuri tested it and got his rerooted. Suppose to be out in a little while. Now all I have to do is see if one of my friends has Linux cause I know nothing about Linux.
