Just received auto-update

Newbie
My phone just dialed a random number (um, by itself). I heard a noise from my phone, picked it up and the phone was telling me I was getting an update. Anyone else? Any idea what the update was? :confused:
 
I don't know of a number being dialed that will give you an update... Updates by Google are just OTA, and you should just see a notification in your status bar for a system update. Not sure what you experienced...

Look in your call log, what was the phone number?

Thought of that--no number. I hung up, put the phone down, it called again. Hung up when finished. I hope it's not a porn subscription or something. :)

LOL that's speculation for sure.

Let them work it out. Engineers are working on it. Marketing people are moving their lips. Let's wait for each of those to tie together, which will probably be judged us end users, lol. :D

I've never, EVER heard of this happening. OP needs to do some explaining. Also, never assume VZW, there's international and even homeland users on GSM. That's a whole different ball of wax, but it has to be asked often.

Honestly, if I could explain it, I wouldn't have posted. I'm rarely the first to notice anything, so hesitated, but it happened twice, the number was odd, like 22978 (not the number but it was merely a string of digits when I looked the second time), and I can't find anything in the log now. This phone is smarter than I, perhaps.

The same thing happened to me last night. I heard the phone while reading and noticed it updating while showing *22898 (might have been *22868). I cancelled the update but it started again on its own.

When I tried dialing it again, I got the message that the number could not be dialed.

Very weird

it's a *22899 number, which is basically a data services update number. Mine did it today on it's own. I would say they should at least warn about it. Perhaps it was a pull from VZW to try to resolve some of the data outage issues that some areas have experienced.

Just called VZW. Tech support said they use *22899 for 3G updates. She looked at call logs from her side and did indeed see that my phone called for updates 2x. I'm in a 4G area, but don't receive 4G reception--maybe my phone was trying to help.

She asked me to take the sim card out--she's going to call back in an hour to see if I get 4G reception afterward.
 
Keep in mind there was a 4G outage as well. Perhaps it's hiccuping trying to come back on your towers.
 
I had the same thing happen twice this morning after being rebooted (before I knew about the wide spread data issues). As stated by others, the number was *22899. Nothing seemed to happen once it dialed though, and then it hung up.
 
If your phone does this it is trying to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL) I would suggest if your phone is doing this to allow it to do so and not worry about it (basically the same as doing *228 on 3G only phones I am unsure if you can call the # without the network telling your phone to) If the network causes your phone to do this it is likely seeing you are on an outdated PRL that needs to be updated.

Took out sim card and got 4G for a bit (2 bars / 1 bar) but now it's gone again. Phone works, and the screen is the best thing since sliced bread, so unless I start dropping calls, I won't worry.

I do have one question: I use K-9 and have notifications on in Settings on the phone and in K-9 but get no LED flash for anything, just the pull-down screen message. Am I missing something?
 
Yup that happened to me too. Phone was on my desk then all of a sudden it came to life and I heard a voice. Maybe its verizon's version of carrier iq.
I was confused because my phone log showed nothing.

Yeah the auto dialing a seemingly random # without user input is a bit disconcerning I agree. I know on the thunderbolt this didn't happen so it could be a feature included on newer LTE phones. You could try toggling mobile data or airplane mode to see if that helps your 4G staying connected if you keep having issues.

For the notification light try LightFlow from the market. I am not sure if K-9 is a supported app or not but if it is then you can set up a LED notification. Lots of people have complaints about the LED notification missing.

Saw another one of these last night. My wife's RAZR has not updated but I hope it fixes where my phone can get data now. Just down the road from me my wife's phone will have data but mine will not. I am hoping this will take care of those issues, although now it looks like they are having a 4G outage.
 
I have had this happen numerous times and here I thought I was butt-dialing (even though the phone was no where near my button, I promise!). So I kept disconnecting...

Hmmm... maybe next time I should just let it go.

(admittedly, I was about to forage for the Reynolds Wrap myself! No alien ray guns getting to my head! :-P)

I get flashbacks to that movie Signs :D The movie was decent but that scene had me on the floor.:p
