Root just rooted my Desire

laffles

Lurker
Hi guys.

I've just done this mainly so i can delete the 20+ bloatware apps from my desire, that's all I want to do right now, I'm going to keep the stock OS for now until I've done some research because as you can tell I'm a super noob to all of this still.

So how do I just delete all these apps like stock/ the demos etc? I have the superuser ninja and everything, but I've gone into settings>applications and still it doesn't let me delete them.

Thanks alot,

Dan.

you can install titanium backup and freeze them. This will make them disappear from your app drawer.

...but won't get you any extra memory (that you can use, at least).
If you want to just de-clutter your app drawer, then fine. But if it's because you want to get some space back then you should look at flashing a ROM with a2sd+ support.

Deleting system apps will not help unless you go down the route of a custom ROM and custom internal partition layout with a smaller /system partition.

Shauny's suggestion is the simplest and safest way of doing this. It doesn't actually remove them, but since you don't gain any space by removing system apps (they are on a different storage partition) the effect is the same, and it's easily reversible.

You can use "adb shell rm" to really remove them, but you need to be sure you know what you are doing. There is a guide to doing this at MoDaco, or just google something like "remove system apps using adb".

To simply uninstall them while running Android you need to be S-Off as well as rooted. But as we've already noted, freezing them will have the same practical effect, so I'd not rush into this.

thanks for the speedy replys guys, much appreciated.

It's not really a case of space to be honest, I have an 8gb card so it's not an Issue, it's more a case of de-cluttering the app page. It really annoys me that they don't let you delete them, it's just rude of them :@

is there (a complete idiots) guide to the 'titanium backup' that you speak of?

Thanks again,

Dan.

1 install ti backup from market
2 press problems button, will probably ask if you want to install the latest busybox. Let it do this.
3 click on backup/restore tab at the top
4 select the app you want to uninstall and simply press freeze app from the options that come up.

so, I purchased 'bloat freeze' as it was only 60p, and when i try and freeze apps, it crashes my phone and goes to the 'htc' start screen and i have to turn off>turn on again.. :( any suggestions?

Yeah, I think most of the regulars here are using Ti Pro - the ability to batch restore rather than app by app would be enough reason for me.

You could always flash another stock rom like teppics rooted stock. This will do what you are trying to do. As you've rooted you can take a nandroid backup in recovery first then simply restore if anything goes wrong. Flashing is kinda scary at first, but it's not too difficult.

I can't justify spending like a fiver on something to remove apps that I should be able to remove in the first place, as it's my phone. otherwise i would have bought that one :(

I see your point but if you're sticking with root you will eventually find this app invaluable.

Absolutely. The free version already does huge amount of things, so it is only fair to say "thanks" to the dev by buying the pro version. And with it, even more things are possible to do. The batch restore mentioned by Hadron is a real time saver if you have more than 100 apps like me. :)

Yeah having to press "install" to each one on the free version is an absolute bind. Titanium and root explorer were 2 of my best purchases. Although Estrongs now does root exploring which almost makes root explorer redundant.

Ah, not quite so embarrassing then - in fact now I look I'd spotted "root features" in the changelog, just had scrolled past the bit that described that they were! But I think there were a lot of updates that night...

Likewise - I guess there were so many that day that I was just skim-reading the changes.

(More changes for me than for most - I was travelling internationally that week, so collected up a stack of updates while I was away).

+1 for Ti Pro.

Nice note about ES as well, I hadn't got round to buying Root Explorer yet, now I guess I don't need to!
