***Never mind I figured it out!****

Ok so I thought I was prepared to root. I downloaded all of the files. I downloaded HTC Sync.

I went to run the SDK Manager and it is stuck and says this:

Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/addons_list.xml, reason: File not found

It won't go past this..

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Can someone help me please...I really hope I didn't brick my phone. Right not it is still connected to my laptop with the bootloader screen showing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Toni~

Welcome to the Forums :D

Ok so lets get figured out what method are you trying to use? Can you tell us your Hboot?

Thank you! So I think I rooted successfully, at least it says unlocked now on the bootloader screen. (My Hboot was 2.18) BUT now I don't see anything different about my phone..meaning no special access to getting rid of bloatware. All of my apps are gone (which is fine) but that is about the only difference I see. And I downloaded the ROM manager but it tells me I need to root my phone.

So I'm not really sure what I did wrong..

I recommend getting rid of Rom Manager. It is very buggy and we have had several people we've had to help because of the program. You should learn to do everything through recovery. It's much better. Also did you install the Amon RA recovery and install the SU File? I would also recommend flashing a custom ROM. There are several good ones out there that are way better than stock. Here are a few worth a mention:

Tommy Tomato's Classic

No Limits Slim and Tweaked

Diablo's Red Line

Diablo's-Koni's Elite Resurrected

That's a good start. All these ROMs are good so its a hard decision to make.

EDIT: All of these has bloatware already removed :D

OK I will uninstall ROM Manager..it won't let me use it anyways.

I used the HTC dev method for rooting and I installed Amon RA recovery.

What is the SU file? Is that SuperUSer? If so, then no I have not done that. Can you point me in the right direction for instructions on how to do that?

Thanks!!

I found this on another thread..is this what I need to install?

"download this and put this file, Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed on the root(not in any folder) of your card via usb cable."

yes thats it.

Make sure you do a Nandroid before messing with stuff on the phone. That way if you mess up you can go back. I would also recommend getting Titanium Backup Pro (Need to dl TB Root First) and Root Explorer (File Manager) If you have to Pro version of titanium you can freeze apps to make sure there will be no ill affect before removing them.

I'm not sure how to go about doing a nandroid.

Also do I need to be in the bootloader screen again when downloading the SU?

To do a Nandroid you will need to boot into Recovery. In Recovery you will choose Nadroid Backup and have Boot, Data, System, and Wimax Checked then backup. You should keep this copy on your computer as well as it has the wimax keys.

No don't need to be in bootloader but will need to be in recovery in order to flash the zip. In Amon RA all you have to do is select flash from zip and then scroll down to the SU file and select it. Follow on Screen Prompts

I would download and flash MikG3.1... Make sure to download the full version and not the update.
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

It is sense 2.1+3.0 so it has all kinds of bells and whistles that arent available for non-rooted EVO users. It also has the sprint hotspot hacked so you can wifi tether for free.

Check out the rooting for dummies guide found here for great information.

You are already rooted so dont worry about that info but read the after root sections

OK so here is where I am at now:

Nandroid- Check!
Titanium Back Up Pro and TB Root- Check!
Root Explorer- Check!

I also Wiped my cache.

I think I am ready to flash my first ROM...now how to choose....:)

I know that you said that most ROMS with remove the bloatware automatically but what if I didn't want to flas any roms how would I go about removing the bloatware?

Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks! That sounds good..I will look into MikG. I'm sure I can find lots of videos on it. I will continue to read through the rooting for dummies thread to gain more knowledge!

Now that you have your nandroid made flashing is very easy. Download your ROM. Download superwipe here:

Place both of them on the SD card.

Now, reboot into recovery.
Select Wipe
Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Data twice each.
Go back to the main menu
Select flash zip from SD
Select & Flash Superwipe
After that completes, Select & Flash the ROM

Reboot.

(NOTE: if you don't have Amon RA as your recovery, you wont be able to use superwipe. It is strongly suggested to use Amon Ra recovery. If you do not have it we can provide directions for changing)

She has amon RA so BIG CHECK there. A few have had problems with MikG 3.1 and hot reboots. I was trying to give her something a bit more stable incase it wanted to do the same for her. Good catch with Superwipe I wasn't thinking about that at that time of the morning. I just happen to wake up but wasn't awake :D

I also recommend once you get used to flashing and Nandroiding that you look into DT's a2sd. Will help free up a lot of space with your apps. Like I said though lets get you comfortable here before moving on :)

True, some do have issues with MikG, but I think it could be more device related than the ROM itself. Some phones just don't play nicely with some ROMS.

I would suggest Tommy's as well, but it is themed pretty heavily and can take some getting used to. Same for redline.

NoLiMiT hasnt been around lately, and I don't know if he plans on keeping the ROM updated. With MikG you know your getting a stable ROM that is going to have support for a long time.

yeah it's Rock, Hardplace, or Rock & A Hardplace, or Heaven on Earth, of course for Heaven in Heaven well then you really have to give stuff up :D Most Sense ROMS of late have been themed with exception to the Stock. Everyone has their Idea of what everyone else wants or everyone has their Idea of what they want and share it with the rest of us. Another Rom that wasn't mentioned that is working out really good for me is Nitrous It's not as themed as most of the others and it has been very stable for me.

Tommy has confirmed his next release which is a huge update wwill be released next week. If you can wait on flashing something else till then it will be worth it.

Or if you don't mind reflashing later go ahead and try a rom today
