Just wanted to make sure I have this process right

1. Root with Z4Root (see SuperUser app in drawer).
2. Download ROM Manager
3. Open ROM Manager
4. Click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
5. Click Backup Current ROM
6. Click Download ROM and get your ROM of choice.
7. Click Install ROM from SD Card

Is that it? Everything will be guaranteed to work with a stable ROM (GPS, Camera, etc)?

Do I need to backup my current apps at any point? Do I have to do anything special with the Google Apps?

And how would I get back to Sense if I wanted to?

Thanks. Just really nervous and I don't want to brick my phone.

Yes, but simply use the RM to flash your recovery, do everything else in recovery.

Once you flash a recovery, then reboot, transfer a Rom of your choice to your SD card and make sure if it is not a sense Rom that you also transfer Gapps to your SD card, once done, then reboot into recovery, then create a Nandroid back up, then do a full wipe, wipe cache, and wipe Davlik, then wipe partitions, then flash the Rom of your choice, then flash Gapps if needed, then reboot and sign in to Gmail, and then set your phone up. Once you have your Rom set exactly like you want it, then create a Nandroid backup of that Rom also for safe keeping, then make sure you put a copy of both back ups on your PC for safe keeping, and also make a full copy of your SD card for safe keeping before and after rooting.

Thanks for that! I have CM7.0.3 installed with google apps. Now how do I get all my other apps and contacts back. I did a backup of all of it using Titanium Backup. Is there a way I can get it all back?

Your contacts are backed up through your google account and should show up under contacts after a few minutes once you are signed in through your gmail account during the setup.

And you restore your apps through titanium backup just like you backed them up. Either hit menu choose batch then restore whichever option you want or you can choose the middle tab(backup/restore) on the initial screen and all your backups will be at the bottom of the list with a line through them. Then you can restore whichever ones you want with the app data or just the app itself by selecting it and picking restore.

Yikes! I messed up. I backed up everything with Titanium and I didn't read rb's post closely enough and I just restored everything. I ran into force closes so I did the fix permissions in ROM Manager. It did its thing and told me to reboot, which I did. But now the phone is stuck at the CM circular arrow.

Please tell me there's a fix.

Ok heres what you are going to want to do.

1. Boot to recovery
2. Restore your nandroid of your rooted stock rom.
3. Goto titanium backup and click the middle tab at the top.
4. From the list pick only the apps you want to back up and choose back up
5. Then back to recovery for a full wipe.
6. Flash cm7.0.3 rom and gapps.
7. Download titanium backup
8. Open and click middle tab.
9. Choose the apps that you backed up and restore them individually.

LOL, RB has you covered, thank god for Nandroid, now you see why we stress the importance of back ups

Hi,

I'm holding down the Home button plus the red Hang Up button simultaneously when I see the HTC screen but it still goes straight to the Cyanogen loop. I can't seem to get to recovery

Sorry for being thick but is hboot a separate screen? Here's what I'm doing:

1. Turn off the phone
2. Turn on the phone
3. Hold the down volume and power button simultaneously.
4. After being at the HTC screen for a few seconds, I hold only the home button.

Then it goes straight from the HTC screen to the CM screen. That happens regardless of which recovery entry method I try.

Thanks for all of your help.

NO do not turn the phone on, simply turn the phone off, once it is powered down, then hit the volume down button and the end button at the same time, then it will go into Hboot, once there hit the home key and that will get you into recovery

Don't turn your phone on. Do this while phone is off. This will boot it to hboot or try the power and home key while phone is off. Hold both buttons until you reach the recovery or hboot.

Edit beat me to it don. I knew they were doing something wrong to not even get to hboot.

Good to hear. Now just follow the steps from above and you should be good to go. Let us know how it goes and if you have anymore questions.
