Help Kaput!

Woke up this morning and I've encountered a number of problems with my phone.

i) I charged my phone last night to 100%, unplugged it to go to sleep and woke up with it at 0%, and was told to plug in the charger. The phone useage was at an insanely high amount for standby and idle

ii) The internet won't work. The phone displays the G/H/3G icon and clearly shows the arrows flashing as if data is being transmitted, but doesnt load webpages or facebook

iii) I sporadically recieve messages. Sometimes they send straight away, sometimes they send after another message is sent, sometimes they don't send at all.

I have auto sync off, USB debugging on and a good task killer.

I had the battery problem about a week ago, but I found the problem to be the LiveProfile app and the battery was normal again. I have no new apps since I fixed this

Cheers guys

Might I ask why? I've had it since the week I bought my phone and it's been nothing but good.
Makes my phone run faster and saves on the battery life imo, and has never given me any trouble

Cheers :)

Check out my post here.

Long story short, android is designed to handle apps it's self and so running automated task killers causes more problems than they solve. The only situation they should be used is if an app is poorly written and is misbehaving.

The later versions of Android are designed to operate as their own task killers. When I'm not posting from my handset, I'll give you some links proving that you don't really need 3rd Party ones. I used to think task killers were the sh*t, but after unnstalling, I see no real difference in battery life and ky handset runs a lot smoother. Seriously, take the plunge and uninstall. ;)

You say they help speed up your phone? If your handset is still laggy or slow, it's a badly coded app, not a result of having too many running.

Deleted the task killer and still no joy. Internet not working despite showing data traffic and sporadically receiving messages.

EDIT:// Maybe the speeding up is all in the mind. I have a short list of apps as I like to clean out and just reinstall if ever I need anything again. I prefer to keep the app drawer tidy

Heres a list, just incase there's anything thats obviously dodgy:
100% Games (Built in), Adobe Reader, Aging Booth, Atomic Bomber, Barcode Scanner, Battery Monitor, Blocked Callers, Calculator, Calendar, Call History, Camcorder, Camera, Car Panel, Chrome to phone, Clock, Connected Media, Copter, Desk Clock, doubleTwist, Facebook, FattyBooth, Flashlight, FM Radio, Friend Steam, Funny Jokes, Gallery, Gameboid Lite, Gmail, Go SMS Pro, Google Search, HTC Hub, HTC Likes, Internet, Latitude, Locations, Mail, Maps, Market, Messages, Music, My Exams, Navigation, Net Counter, News, News and Weather, Paper Toss, Peep, People, Phone, Places, Pool Master Pro, Quick Lookup, Quickoffice, Reader, ROM Gripper, Search Anywhere, Search People, Settings, Setup, Shopper, Sim Toolkit, Sky and BBC Sports news, Sky +, Soundhound, Stocks, Talk, Talking Tom, Teeter, TopApps, Transfer Data, Translate, TuneIn Radio, TV Guide, Twitter, Videos, Voice Recorder, Voice Search, Weather, Wifi, William Hill, World War, Youtube

I also use launcher pro and the clock widget BobClock D3

I know that looks like a lot, but most are built in. I just posted my whole app drawer

Died on me again last night after being on 100% before I slept

The worrying battery useage stats:
Cell Standby 43%
Phone idle 41%
Display 4%
Android System 4%
Android OS 3%
Go SMS Pro 3%

Concerning to say the least? Over a period of 10h 39m and constantly asleep

Do you live in a poor signal area? If your signal keeps dropping, that's a massive drain on the battery trying to obtain it again/look for a stronger one.

Install this to see what's eating your battery. Leave it run for a few hours and don't touch your phone.

Install this to see if there's any app using data whilst your phone is sleeping.

The signal in my area is pretty immaculate. 3G or H internet and full bars most of the time

I'll download those apps and see what the results are :) cheers mate

Yeah, no worries :). Something is desperately wrong with those numbers.

Do you have your sense account syncing? I'm sure I read somewhere that sense sync can be a huge drain on battery, might want to try turning it off if it is.

Also take a look at the comments left for the apps you've installed that weren't already preinstalled, see if any of those are battery drainers.

I've installed PhoneUsage for the moment, however I didn't install the other one as I'm not too comfortable putting my bank details in, especially with the phone acting up the way it is at the moment (probably meaning theres a rogue app somewhere)

EDIT:// How do I use that phone usage app to identify apps? I can only see data usage on a whole - Not what individual apps have been consuming

When installing I ALWAYS read the comments to make sure apps are reputable, thats why I don't understand this. I've installed no new apps recently and anything I have installed looks fine.

I've got auto sync off - I tried it once and it certainly drained the battery quicker, but it's been off for weeks.

I'm beginning to think it may be something to do with mobile data, so that usage app may help. Like I say, my mobile internet wont work, yet the arrows are almost always flashing, showing data transmission. I'll leave that on for a few hours and see how it goes.

Fair enough on the paid app, it was only after I'd posted that I'd realised it cost something, apologies. You can try Elixir or OS Monitor, but I don't think they do the extensive monitoring/logging like System Panel does. By the looks of things, they will only monitor at the time the app is running and won't give historical data. There's another app called Current Widget which will create log files, but I can't seem to find a log viewer which will read its output. As a consequence, they just look like walls of text at the moment. I'll have a play about and see what I can come up with. But if you're mega desperate, you could just trawl through the file manually, looking at what's running when the mAh is high?

If you scroll along to the Data tab in Phoneusage, move to the bottom of the page, you'll get a graph of all apps that are using data. Once is collected a bit, you can view it via certain peroids of time.

An easier option might be Usage Monitor. You can see at a glance, what is chewing through data. Looks to only work for 3G though.

Phone Usage is making for some pretty interesting reading...
I've apparently used 70KB of data in the last hour, despite the fact that the internet on my phone isnt actually working. The arrows below the 3G/H/G symbol are almost always flashing, but I can't get anything to load!

The graph at the bottom gives the following results:
Sim Toolkit - >1/4 of data usage??????
Clock (I dont use the stock data widget at all, BobClock is mine) - 1/5th ish
Setup - 1/5th ish
Maps (I havent used at all) - 1/5th ish

The rest are all pretty nominal, but again are things I don't use at all such as HTC Hub, Calendar, Friend Stream, Peep and stocks

I strongly suspect google maps is to blame! It's going up by about 0.1KB every few seconds. How do I stop this?

What is Sim toolkit? I've seen others mention that and have no idea what it is.

Have you checked your APN Settings in regard to your slow connection? What network are you on and I'll see if I can dig them up for you.

It came installed with the phone, its a T-Mobile feature I think, mainly containing links

I'm on T Mobile.

To be honest, I think I'm just going to have to send it to HTC. There's clearly something wrong when all at once the battery drains, the internet stops working and texts aren't always being recieved

Can anyone recommend a good backup app if they replace or reset my handset? I only need to backup the vitals, such as contacts, music, apps, app data, photos, videos etc

Aye, RMA sounds like the best bet to be honest.

Contacts should be backed up via the google account associated with the handset. To check, go to the contacts section of the gmail account and see if there are a load of phone numbers listed and these match up with the ones on your handset.

If not, go into the contacts section of your handset, hit the menu button -> Import/Export -> Export to SD Card. It will then create a .csv or a .vcf file (can't remember which :o) with all your contacts in it. Next time you attach the handset to the PC, mount it as a USB Device, find the file that was created and copy it to your PC. This can then be imported to your gmail account. Any Music/Vids or Pics etc you want to keep can also be copied to the PC via the same method.

Your apps are associated with the gmail account too; so once it's linked, your apps should download again, even if it is a new handset. I've had mixed experiences with this, so might want to seek further advice. They didn't with my GF when I flashed her handset (Orange San Francisco), but my boss had his handset replaced and his apps downloaded once he set it up again. Failing that, this will backup the list of installed apps.

Providing you get your handset back within 30 days, the lite version of MyBackuPro should backup everything though.
