Keep losing 4g

I just picked up this phone for my wife and am having issues keeping it in 4G mode. When I first powered up it was 2-3 bars of 4G, I did a speed test and it was comprable to another phone (Samsung Exhibit II 4G) on the same network (T-Mobile). But as I was trying to install some apps I noticed it was super slow. So I noticed now the phone was reporting 2G with 5 bars, we are in a fringe area so it isn't completely uncommon to switch back and forth as you move through the house but I was sitting still. What further confused me was each time it did this I could go into network settings and pick the 4G network and for a short time it would report 4G only to drop down to 2G. I left it for a while but never saw it go back up on its own. Is there some setting I am missing? It is set to automatically choose best network, don't remember all the letters but know it included LTE. Hoping to get some help because the 2G is brutally slow. Phone is rooted if that makes a difference.

I don't have a specific answer for you but remember, at the frequencies we're talking about, a dog walking past the window the phone is near can change the network you're on. It's not just moving the phone around the environment that does it, it's also moving the environment around the phone that can do it. If you're close to the ragged edge, I'd suggest finding a more solid 4G location before starting any downloads. Even moving a few feet or up higher (in the house or on a rise of ground) could make a world of difference.

Thanks for the response but I should have been clearer. The other phone never lost 4g coverage while the new phone continued to lose it and drop to 2g. Once it dropped it would never back unless I searched for available networks and forced it to connect to 4g...but usually within 15 min it would drop to 2g again.

What plan do you have for data 500 megs can be used very quickly especially if shared. Maybe you are being throttled for going over data amount? I would call t mobile or check the web site to see how much data you have and have used. If plenty of data left then i would ask for a replacement phone yours may be defective.
