Help Keeping roaming costs low

Hello,

I previously owned a windows smartphone and could easily control costly data transmissions when abroad, where I spend most of the month. I am a bit confused with Android though and what I need to do/look out for.

If I understand it correctly, Wifi can be left on as it is free (in many places) but data collection through phone providers is costly (3g I presume). But I do still want to make and collect phone calls.

So what on the Galaxy do I need to turn off when abroad and how do I know if it is active at any time?

Can GPS be left on, is that free or chargable?

GPS = free.

Go into settings - wireless and network - mobile networks (at the bottom) - uncheck use packet data (to turn off 3g). I plan to have the data roaming off most of the time. This doesn't affect phone calls or texts.

But a very good free app to get is 3G watchdog - which monitors your data use.
