Root [KERNEL] Franco Kernel Discussion (r68)

I've flashed Cataclysm (and loving it-- I think it will take me weeks to figure out all the settings ;) ). Am thinking of flashing the Franco Kernel. I've flashed ROMs before so i am pretty comfortable. I've never flashed a kernel. I'm not doing it because I understand kernels well enough to have some compelling need I'm looking for. I would like to play with settings that might extend battery life.

My main question is, is this just like flashing a ROM or is there something I need to do first? If I restore a Nandroid from before the kernel was flashed, will the kernel be gone? If not, is there a way to "go back" if for some reason I don't like it? Is there some kind of backup I need to do first?

If there is something I should have read before attempting this, let me know. I am planning on buying Franco's updater tool from the Play Store.

Assuming your current setup is already to your liking, I would definitely create a nandroid prior to flashing a kernel.

How to install a kernel
Firstly, you need to download said kernel (in this case, Franco r14). Once it has been downloaded, slap it on the root of your sdcard or place it in a folder. Reboot to recovery. In recovery, wipe cache & dalvik. Flash kernel .zip. Wipe cache & dalvik again (just to be safe). Reboot system.
 
I'm not sure if it's the same with Franco kernel, but I know with Faux kernel you have to have busybox installed to make it stick.
 
I'm using paid version FKU. It asks me if I bought it or not. Yes spent $4.99 in playstore. Then it tells me I need internet connection, I am on WiFi.
Should it be set on boot?

I'm personally not a fan of setting voltages or clock speeds at boot just in case I select something that's not good for my device because it might completely screw up your device if you set them too low or too high.
 
I believe Busybox was installed with Catalysm ROM.
FKU asks If I purchased it...Yes from Play Store

How to get undervolts to stick?
 
I wasn't able to get my CPU settings to stick on boot either w/ FKU. I had to use Trickster to get it operational.
 
I'd still like an answer to the question of how do I undo a kernel flash if I don't like it. Does restoring a Nandroid done with the stock kernel do it or do I need to find a stock kernel to reflash somewhere? I just like to know I can undo things if I need to. ;)

The kernel is stored in /boot

If you don't like it, just do a nandroid restore of /boot or flash the stock kernel :thumbup:
 
Well, I dood it. I have no idea what I'm doing with this thing, but will be fun to learm. I *think* I volted down -50. Lol. :D

I tried to flash Cataclysm but couldn't get it to flash properly, home button wouldn't work, lost signal and data, went back to my restore. Question though, can I use this kernel with stock rom?

Odd. Was smooth as silk on my Nexus 5 flashed with TWRP. Did you try a simulated battery pull (hold power button, ignoring menu, until spontaneous reboot?
 
Ok last question for this Thanksgiving night. I've installed the kernel but don't know where to go to adjust voltage...please help...I'm tired. LOL!
 
I paid for the Franco Updater in the Play Store, which the paid version gives you a lot of tools. I paid for it to support the dev. There are other apps that can do kernel settings, like ROM toolbox.
