Root [KERNEL] Franco Kernel Discussion (r68)

The flashable zip runs a script that is going to set them at each boot, so there may be conflicts if you change things within the FKU app, which will also try to set things at boot.

I've always just set them manually. There are not that many, and you might find some new things poking around in there ;)

Cool, thanks I've set them manually do they look right?

The 'above hispeed delay' setting I didn't know what to do with and I only just noticed what you said about all the cores always being on, not sure what to do there?

Franco is one busy man! R48 is out and ready for you and it has a couple of improvements.
Larger kernel image... But faster boot time.
Improved interactive governor performance without sacrificing battery life.

R48 is running nice and smooth on DU!

So how much improved battery life with r48 with your personal usage is your battery better because I'm looking to flash this over PAC asop to get a little more battery

Edit: flashed and soft bricked so I think I should find a CAF kernel anyone know any good battery ones (I'm gonna do a little browsing)

Yeah you definitely need a CAF kernel for PAC.
Before I switched to using Franco kernel, I was using ElementalX. There is a CAF version for CM based ROMs too... It's a great kernel, very stabile, smooth and battery life was great. I'd highly recommend it. Truthfully I can't really tell much of difference between the two kernels, they both run sweet on the N5.

[KERNEL] [April 28] ElementalX-N5-0.38 | Google Nexus 5 | xda-developers

If you do decide to try it out, download the CAF version with the aroma installer (not the express version) and as with any new kernel, run it for a good couple of days minimum to let is settle in.

I have used elementalx on my previous ROM and the one before it its a great kernel and that deCAFing zip sounds interesting

Just flashed, it seems I can't undervolt as aggressively now. I was running everything at - 75 but that was giving me reboots so had to pull back to - 50.

I usually undervolt at -50 as a standard. I can't remember what version it was, maybe R47 and I set it at -75 and got reboots too. UV at -50 seems to be a good setting either way.

I'm getting wonky things going on with r50. Switching from cataclysm back to stock to make sure its not ROM related.

Hmm that's strange!
I've been running r50 all day without any issues.
I'm curious to know if it's ROM or kernel related as well.
Keep us updated on what transpires.

It seems to be cataclysm related. I was getting power button lag as well as SOD's. Didn't see them on stock, DU, or OMNI.

I was on cataclysm for over a week on r49 with rare power button lag. It didn't seem to play well with r50. Oh well, such is the life of root. That week without flashing anything was too boring :o

Edit: Running PA today, don't expect any ROM-related issues since Franco is their official kernel dev

A whole week without flashing... That is boring! Lol ;)
Still kinda strange that all the sudden r49/50 didn't want to play nice on cataclysm... Must of been some changes that Francisco made to the kernel.
I know it's a stable build, but I don't think cataclysm has been updated since like Dec or so.
Well glad you got it figured out and it looks like you got some good flashing time in too!

And R51 is out!
Added in a couple fixes and faster GPU response time on input events.

I Definitely noticed a lot faster of a boot time on r51.

R52 :)

Can't do any further testing while at work but was getting some really odd behavior out of Franco combined with the latest test build of DU (7/13).

1. As soon as I added Franco r57 to the new DU test build, I started boot looping. Clean flash didn't help. Strangely enough, restoring a nandroid of the previous version didn't help. Downgrading to r56 didn't help. Was fine with the DU stock kernel (not furnace). What finally seemed to fix it was flushing all Franco settings and resetting them manually.

Theory for #1: I think I may have upped the undervolting from -50Mv to -75Mv some time back and it seemed okay. I suspect something changed and it was no longer okay. Keeping it at -50Mv and, so far okay.

2. Going to reset up all the settings brought up another odd problem. With the latest FKU (which had just been updated maybe a day or two ago), whenever I went to try and change a governor setting, it would only bring up the CPU frequency screen. Rebooting didn't help. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help. I finally used TB to install and older version of FKU and everything behaved fine and I was able to make my settings. I will try reinstalling the update later tonight with my settings already locked in and see if I see the same thing or if it was some fluke. Anyone seeing or reporting anything like this? If it happens again tonight, I'll report it to Franco-- or there may be already be a fix posted by then. ;) Just weird.

If anyone's interested there's a kernel thread on XDA of an updated version of Franco's old kernel builds (before the he built it all over again during r35 or r36). The configuration the op posts is very battery efficient. I had to stick to stock because I get the worse luck using custom kernels (first boots fine on first launch and then the ROM doesn't run anymore so it just keeps resetting).

For #2, just reinstalled the newest version of FKU and all is behaving like it is supposed to. Have no idea what was going on last night, but everything seems to be working again. I think just got one of those weird conjunctions of funny but temporary stuff going on until I was able to do something that shook things up enough to blow past it.

Happy again. :)

Just happened again, this time while at work. Tried a couple of things to see if I could answer forum questions and I started getting reboots, then just started rebooting in a loop. Restored the original DU kernel and all is fine. I see a couple of others complaining of this on the forum, so I suspect something is up. Will try completely removing UV and see. May use this as an excuse to check out other kernels, including the native DU one, until this passes.
