Root Kernel help

Wondering if anyone can point me to a good source to read about kernels.
I'm thinking maybe I should try a different kernel to see if I can slow down the battery drain on CM7, but am having trouble sorting out which kernels work on what ROM etc.

Thanks muchly! A good explanation of terms and so on. But I am still not clear on where to find kernels that work on the desire, and are compatible with which roms

I think you can use manu with cm7
