Kernels+Recoveries

Im new to this device and after reading through the one stop shop for roms, kernels and modems i have a few qeustions. Im leaning towards flashin a AOSP rom but wont until i feel comfortable with the process. My question is what is EL26? is it a kernel+recovery or just a kernel. i see its needed to flash most AOSP roms. can i flash that from my current AGAT JB recovery. Also how do modems relate to the process of flashing or functioning. Some of these roms look really cool and i see lots hof devs have been hard at work on this awesome phone. could someone list some roms compatible with my current AGAT 4.1 recovery as well as a explination of EL26 and the preocess involved with flashing it plus the recovery if its not included. thanks guys. IM sorry im such a pain, just not used to this device and the process involved with flashing custom roms. (seems very complicated) but i imagine its worth it

just follow the op for best results in flashing ROMs also ICS modems are needed for aosp ROMs ATM

el26 is a safe boot recovery you need it to wipe and factory resit if you use any other recovery then that you might end up triggering the brick bug.

kernel and recovery are packed with the same.

I'm on touch recovery 2.5.0.0
using jb wipe x2 wipe script and then flashing aosp ROMs granted I don't flash a ICS modem but my WiFi still works as that's all I use it for anyway.
there's more info in the sticky ahead of theses posts

You can use any recovery labeled safe which includes the ones Garwynn made for GB27 and GC01. Also not all phones can be affected by that bug anyways. It is a combination of firmware with certain chips not all the phones have that chip.

really? I thought all phones with the ICS firmware at the time had that lol
anyway code will lead you in the right place just follow his wise words of wisdom

Thanks for the input guys. So can I ask how does Odin factor in. I've read a couple download instructions where it says to flash via odin. I'm starting to think maybe I should just stay stock because I have no idea what a modem is in relation to this phone let alone worrying about the ROM and kernel+recovery. Normally rooting is a pain and flashing is easy, for this phone it seems the opposite lol. Thank you guys again for the help. At this point I feel like I need a galaxy s2 flashing for dummies guide

Its alright bro I was scared to at first untill I simply used mobile odin (you can get the app somewhere Im not allowed to say) and then flash el26

Heres all you need

Stock jb touch wiz

El26
The rom you want im on the goodness rom its fk23 stock but freaking awsome
And thats it!!! Yay

But do note if coming from ics you must use odin
Install kies and tthen grab odin
Put the el26 im kernel (unless you have one click of theses packages)

And reboot your phone when it says passed

Flash your rom of choice and tada!!! Your done

For aosp I would stick with the op instructions

But mostly like this
Download your aosp or cm rom and then the gapps
Get a ics modem newst is fl24
(Thanks to grem for correcting me )
Flash your el26 (from above mentioned method)
And then wipe/factory resit
Wipe davlic cache and your good
Next flash your rom and then gapps
Then the modem revoot and your done

Note that on stock roms all you need is the rom it self and el26 modem recoverys are included

But if.your tech freak like most of us
My build is touch recovery installed with the goodness rom and everything is working great

From what I've read, the 4.1.2 touchwiz rom has the best performance. I normally can't wait to start flashing roms but at this point I'm really impressed with this phone in every aspect. A little customization would be nice though

FL24 is the newest ICS modem (shown in the about phone as baseband).

I have stuck with a stock rooted and just made adjustments here and there. There are some nice TW JB Roms when you can flash from the recovery you have. One thing to note is that most custom ROMs are based on the Sprint GB27 so you need to know your MSL to adjust the MMS server settings to the ones for Boost.

Well put gentlemen. That's some VERY helpful info. I have just a few more questions. If I understand correctly odin is used to flash recoveries, does it matter if I use the mobile version I've heard of? Germ, the mms fix you mentioned (and I've seen mentioned in ROM descriptions) is it complicated? I've used msl reader before on sprint, never on boost. I'm new to boost as well as samsung. Exgenmeikoj, thank you again as well. So el26 is a recovery used for asop ROMS? When you say flash using above mentioned method, just so I'm clear you mean the pda box in odin? And modems, are they zip files flashed in recovery? I'll always follow the devs instructions when flashing a ROM but these are just programs I've never used before. You guys telling me how odin and modems factor in helps. And finally, I'll always have to use a ICS modem for AOSP ROMS and FL24 for JB and I already have fl24 am I right?

Odin is a method to flash in software very useful especially when you don't have a recovery kernel yet. Mobile Odin is useful for that too, though it cant do modems on our phone for some reason.

EL26 is an older gingerbread kernel with recovery that everyone started using to flash to other ROMs because of the eMMC Brick bug that showed its ugly head when flashing from ICS. When using EL26 you flash it in boot into its recovery then flash the new ROM which replaces EL26 with the kernel that comes with the ROM. There are other kernels that are labeled safe for doing this now. Check out the One Stop Shop that is a sticky at the top of this forum.

The MMS fix is not difficult, and is very easy on the Touch Wiz ROMs. getting your MSL it a little more involved the MSL reader doesn't work on our phones with the stock ICS or JB, but you can get if from Boost.

FL24 is an ICS modem, and is the newest. your GC01 and GB27 are JB modems (they use the build number just like the ROMs do). To see what modem you have go into settings on your phone and go to about phone then look at the baseband (that is the modem). IF you have GC01 then you will have the GC01 modem and would need to flash an ICS modem to use an AOSP ROM, but are fine to leave it there if flashing a custom Touch Wiz JB ROM.

So don't use mobile Odin to flash a modem. I do have GC01 in my baseband version so I'm good to flash any TW JB ROM including the ones that are "touched" by SG3 and SG4 or am I wrong? You're saying I have no choice but to call boost mobile to get my msl? You said EL26 gives you a kernel which is compatible with AOSP ROMS and then use the recovery+kernel that comes with the ROM to do backups and flash any mods I want to. So what recovery do I use to flash a AOSP ROM? So I can flash recoveries via odin, mobile or otherwise, modems are .Zip files i I flash via recovery before I flash the ROM?

No EL26 is only used for its recovery to flash ROMs. the kernel is replaced by the one that comes with the ROM. you can't boot to the ROM on the EL26 kernel. The EL26 kernel itself won't boot ICS or JB ROMs.

Yes, you are fine for any TW JB rom with the GC01 modem.

There are some methods for getting your MSL but involve either flashing back to an ICS ROM or to a GB ROM etc. Just call Boost and either used the automated prompt trouble shooting method (options for problems with MMS sending and data) or just talk to a rep. The other methods are annoying, it is easier to call boost.

Om a side note do not use the touch whiz recovery. I had a fatal accident when I droped my phone and then the battery flung out I put it back in and bam boot loop on samsung logo. Needless to say I tryed to go through recovery and guess what!!! Stock recovery was tthere. I then said fk ill try to odin el26 and couldnt do it. It failed
I have drivers and system drivers installed just finally got the repack one click working for gb27 but still wouldnt boot so I redid el26 and it worked then I just simply reinstalled my rom the goodness.
Everything is working so far but does anyone know why this happened? Also is there an agat recovery for fk23 ? Hopefully working well

im to scared to touch my phone with anymore odin and other things

Im so happy I was able to fix it my girl would of stright murdered me lol

So if i flash a touchwiz rom will it come with the touchwiz stock recovery. would i have to flash TW ROM, then go back into odin and flash the AGAT 4.1 recovery zip? It is starting to seem like staying stock is my best bet. i got a little happy when i saw i could use anytouch wiz rom but if it comes with the stock recovery i cant make a backup correct?

Germ thank you for your continued support. dont know where ill be without you. So you use EL26 to flash the rom, then let it get replaced with the kernel that comes with the rom. but how do you replace the el26 recovery, do you keep the recovery as it is the only one compatible with AOSP ROMS? you said it (el26) wont boot JB and ICS roms but isnt cm10 and most relavent AOSP roms JB?

No the jb comes with stock recovery if yoy want custom you will have to flash agats theres a post of this mentioned I dont remember where atm
The touch recovery says for aosp roms only so that was my fault I knew it wasnt correct but even then the twrp reinjected into boot and then I should of still had it

Again there is no universal custom recovery, It is tied to the kernel. When the kernel is replaced, so is the recovery. If the ROM you flash comes with a custom recovery kernel then you will have the one that you flash in with the kernel that is included in the ROM. AOSP JB ROMs are different from TW JB ROMs Booting to recovery is not booting to the ROM. You can only boot into recovery if you flash EL26 in so be prepared to flash a ROM or Flash back to the kernel for the ROM you have (in other words have the files on your phone).

dizzle16, it really sounds like you are quite lost. So if in reading the instruction for "Any" ROM you wish to try out you find hard to follow, then I suggest you have someone that understands it flash it for you.

I have a better understanding but am still just a little lost. I think I'll definitely take that advice. I'm not that wild about any ROMs in the one stop shop except maybe CM 10.1 wild for the night. Again thank you for your help in getting me this far.

Ok for a better explanation when I flashed any rom I started like this

Flash el26 (most common used recovery in all the ops )
Theres one clicks for this
Then wipe factory and resit
Wipe cache
Then again wipe davlik

Now from this point on make sure you would of already have downloaded your rom you want.
If you want touch wiz based roms just flash them dont worry about the kernel or modem all that comes with

If you want aosp then flash that and then fl24 modem after words and then reboot thats it all done

For custom recoverys you must match them with your base rom for example agats gb27 base is for gb27
Go to the xda froms for epic 4g touch and go under android development
Read the stickys there

Also just for friendly advice its almost impossible to brick this phone
I have gotten outta some bad recoverys even flashing a bad file or the usb wire pulling lose on an old computer thats hella slow and I still have the phone running lol you will do fine just read the ops through and througg theres even videos

Cm 10.1 is a great rom I had and used it I still have a back up of it when I had it installed

The main key to flashing making sure your items are on your sd csrd or internals
Also wipeing will not delete files off internal or sd card

That seems simple enough. At the risk of sounding like a ******s I must admit the more it has been explained the more I'm understanding. I have just a few more questions? So I would use odin to flash the el26? Then go into phone wipe all and flash ROM (+g-apps if needed). Did mms work for you on cm 10.1? Is a modem a .zip file? I flash that after the ROM? Sorry to just fire of those questions like that, again I understand recoveries, kernels and ROMs, just needed to get a better understanding of modems and at what point do I flash one. So again odin installs recovery, then wipe data, cache, davlik and then rom and finally modem or just follow the download instructions on the ROMs homepage?

Lmao

Ok to answer all theses qustions
Frist off odin is your friend yes you do flash from there and then do the wipes after that you will flash the modem for cwm recovery theybwill be zip files for odin there tar formats

I did not do the mms fix because I use whatsapp for everything I mostly staybon data or wifi
The kernel is with the recovery and vise versa

Just follow the instructions on the page and you will do fine
In the future i would recommend mobile odin where you can flash all from your rooted phone.

You will do the steps according to how ever the original poster placed them gapps is only needed by aosp flash this before theodem or after it dosent matter the modem is the vary last thing

For imstalling cm10.1 taken from the original op

Do NOT use a JB modem
Flash a safe recovery (el26)
Flash an ICS modem (fl24)
Flash ROM
Flash GAPPS (if new installation or coming from CM10)
Reboot

ok looking at the kernel repository does it matter if i chose the .zip or .tar format. so i choose .tar if i flash via odin and .zip if i flash via recovery. and looking at the repository, the infamous EL26 RECOVERY, is it this
GB - Stock EL26 Repacked Kernel
?

I suppose i could use the link on the one stop shop page. but looking at the repository page at xda the only FL24 (i dont see it listed on the one stop shop page, fl34 that is) I see it on the xda page under

ICS - Stock/Touch-Wiz Kernels (Leaked)
Available Kernels (ZIP Format): FL24

do i HAVE TO GET it from that website thats linked? the linked website doesnt list that file. if you can, can you go to the xda repository under ICS - Stock/Touch-Wiz Kernels (Leaked) where FL24 is listed and click on that link and tell me if you can find that file (fl24) because i dont see it. any idea where i can get mobile odin as well? i know you referenced it before and said it was unmentionable lol but i plan on flashing from pc but would like to have the mobile version just in case. And thank all you guys for your help, i know at this point im a pain in the a**. but i understand a hell of a lot more than i did 2 days ago for what its worth lol.

Lol bro just grow some balls and flash
Honestly I just told you

All you need is el26 theres a one click for this
Then inside cwm just flash your jb touch whiz rom
If you want aosp then grab that and the modem

Read carefully the zip is for cwm recoverys
The tars is for the pc odin or mobile odin

Your flashing from cwm you will only need zip
Now to unclutter that brain of yours the roms come with everything sometimes (if in the op) they will have costum recoverys
But when yoy flash the rom it self there already in the pack
The kernels are if you want a differnt name for a kernel or differnt mods aand etc

On a side note dont mean to be rude but rtfm bro
Theres a reason why theres stickys and videos on how to flash for this phone its supa easy not even kidding you its too easy just as it was for my old prevail

correct me if im wrong but this:

is what i just said in my previous post. what i asked is where is FL24? I appreciate your help but i dont have to flash anything. ill be fine staying stock, i have a busy life and am i retaining as much as i can in regards to a phone ive had rooted 4 days, while working full time and managing my house and family. all i need to know about cm 10.1 is where the hell is the FL24 Modem. when i located the fl24 modem at the xda repository the link takes you to a website that has blank info in the download box. If I'm frustrating you just don't answer, if it's meant to be, I'll get it done, if not, I'll live. But in your post yesterday you said grab the fl24 modem for cm10. I have more balls than I know what to do with, but I also have bills abs I just paid $325 for this phone, I'm not gonna "just flash" anything without research. I'll just watch the video for that rom. Thanks for getting me this far
