i recently flashed cyanogenmod 6.1 to my girlfriends cdma hero and got lost in a hero g2 forum. they were talking about this flykernel to use on cyanogenmod 6. i guess it makes the phone faster for games etc. etc. but i was wondering if i could flash this kernel to the cdma hero or if i need a different one for this specific phone. and how would i go about flashing this kernel???

You should only flash CDMA kernels to a CDMA handset. There are plenty of custom kernels out there for the Sprint HTC Hero as well.

You flash kernels the same way you flash a ROM, which is in recovery. Frankly, I would recommend flashing CyanogenMod 7.1 and just going with the kernel that it comes with. It already allows the Sprint HTC Hero to be overclocked well above the stock frequency of 528 MHz. Give that a try.

I tried the 7.1 but my girlfriend and I thought it was real slow. The screen off animation stopped working and the games play real slow...even with the v6 supercharger. What kernel would you recommend for this tiny little phone??? And can I overclock this cm6 rom?

With CyanogenMod 7.1 you can disable the screen off animation if that annoys you. If your home screens feel a bit slow try switching to LauncherPro. What game is your girlfriend trying to play? Unfortunately, even if you overclock the Sprint HTC Hero, you have to realize that it is first generation Android hardware and some games are going to play slower than others. We are talking about a two year old smartphone here, albeit still a great one. Most games should still run fairly well though if you keep what I said above in mind.

You can overclock CyanogenMod 6 if you like. I liked to use Deca's custom kernels with that. Try overclocking it to 768 MHz. If your girlfriend's Sprint HTC Hero boot loops, then you may have to back the frequency down to 720 MHz. To be honest, CyanogenMod 7.1 should technically be faster and more efficient battery wise than CyanogenMod 6 is. After all, Android 2.3 did see some improvements in those departments.

All of her games seemed real slugish with cyanogenmod 7. No fancy games...just games like city jump. The screen off animation is what we liked and it was always on it just only worked when it wanted to. Thanx for the info... I'm asuming these deca kernels aren't hard to find. I know the phone is ancient but I'm just trying to make it as good as possible. Thanx again.

Development and flashing information on Deca's custom kernels can be found over at xda-developers. Do a little searching around the Sprint HTC Hero subforum over there and you will find what you seek.

The Sprint HTC Hero is a venerable handset that was once Sprint's flagship Android device. It is still a great handset to have even to this day and I understand what you are trying to do. You just need a little more "oomph" out of it. Hopefully, the overclocking kernels that I mentioned above will help you out.
