Help Keyboard keys intermittently stop funtioning. Anyone else had this?

Alternate lock app , as in a separate app you downloaded to lock your phone ? Other than just going to setting and creating a pin password or pattern ? Because all i have is a pin number lock through the phones settings and even getting rid of that does nothing really

Just as an update, there IS a way to make the alternate lock screen program work. In Widgetlocker, go to settings, then go to Advanced and put a check next to Retain System Keyguard. Widgetlocker will no longer cause the keyboard to function oddly. However, the activation of widgets will cause the old lock screen to appear. This doesn't happen with application launcher icons however, so feel free to load up your home screen with info widgets you don't click on and programs and it should work pretty transparently. Enjoy!

im not sure if that was a response to my question but im not sure , but i dont have pretty much anything on my phone besides what it has came with stock at this points .. just a few worthless apps and the handscent text messaging app and my touchscreen and keyboard still dont seem to function properly

any sugjestions on what i might be able to do anyone ?
would even rooting my phone and possible getting a custimed ROM help any of my problems or is it just not worth the trouble ?

Chevy, I'd recommend doing a factory restore, wiping the memory card clean, and then doing a factory restore again. If this didn't fix your problem I'd be quite surprised.

so by whipping the memory card clean , i wouldn't be able to keep any of the pictures, apps, phone numbers , etc. i have now after resting it ?

Well, yes and no. If you've got your phone synced with a Google account and you've put everything into that google account, all your phone numbers, apps, system settings, etc, will be restored after you reformat your phone. If you download your pictures to your computer before-hand, you can put them back on the phone when you're done as well.

About the only thing that's unrecoverable are your text messages and any data from applications that don't backup their info to a micro-SD card.

If you can live with those losses, I'd strongly recommend the factory restore - if that doesn't fix it, then I'd take it back and tell them it's defective. Factory restores have always saved the day for me, and I've had some pretty strange issues. The only one I couldn't fix with it was the widgetlocker issue (because every time I reinstalled it the problem came back). But the setting change I mentioned above even solves it for that program now.

If you're looking for the best way to backup as much as you can (and you're not rooted), I'd recommend MyBackup Pro. It saves everything it can. Just make sure you copy the contents of the SD card to your computer after you backup so you can reload that stuff again after you wipe your SD card.

well lets say that theoretically i was rooted , would resetting my phone get rid of everything i had done sense its a factory reset ? would i have to redo everything all over again like rooting my phone ?

I don't believe you'd have to root again, since you're not re-imaging the computer, just wiping all the user data. But everything else would be back to factory condition.

And if you're rooted, I'd highly recommend titanium backup. There's almost nothing you can't restore with that.

is that the better back up system ? i saw something on here somewhere about ROM manager i think is what it was called that was supposed to be "great" according to what i think i read

Rom managers can back up the entire phone exactly as it is now, which is perfect if you want to try out different roms. The problem in your case is that the exact configuration of your phone is the problem - it's causing random crashes. By using a program like titanium backup and selectively restoring app data as needed (and avoiding the process where possible and using the cloud sync), you avoid the specific configuration issues that are causing your phone to have a problem at the moment.

okay , so if i was planning on but haven't rooted my phone yet then i should probably wait until i reset it and get my pics and contacts back basically and see if the problem stops first before rooting or anything ?

Absolutely. It takes a lot of work to get a phone un-rooted and back to stock state, and even then it can be tricky. If you've never rooted your phone, if a factory reset won't fix the problem then you can get your phone replaced as defective without a worry in the world. I definitely wouldn't root your phone until you have a setup that works great for a month or two with all the phone's hardware confirmed working as great. And then make sure you really need what a root offers - sometimes it's really nice to know you can just take the phone in once you've tried everything and get a new one if necessary without hassle.

I tried messing around with my phone for a while and seeing if i could get anything to work, i realized that i had downloaded the handcent sms app instead of using my original text messaging but that didn't make a difference at all. And i saw the video that you posted PyroSporker , and believe i downloaded the same exact drawing app that you used in your video ( at least i think so ) and as your phone left out parts of the line where your screen you said was unresponsive or dead in those areas. My phone didn't just not draw the line in those spots but instead will jump over to the right or left depending how close or far away from the right edge of the screen i am. And drawing a straight line up and down it will basically zig zag straight lines to the left and right at different angles

I have attached a picture that i stupidly drew in paint of pretty damn close to identically what my screen looks like in the drawing app and yours from the video

attachment.php

as you can see to the left of where my screen seems to have the problems is pretty much fine and where the lines zig zag between the two straight lines i drew my fingers up and down and it kept shooting those patterns in between the lines.

any comments or advice would really help !

thanks:D

Welcome to the forums. I just wanted to clarify that it is not my video, I ran across it on Youtube and I posted it here to help others visualize what is taking place on some handsets. I have not had touch screen issues myself but found it so very curious and took an opportunity to provide some visual proof and further exemplify this issue for everyone's sake. It is a tough thing to try to describe to others, so a video really helps others to understand what could be going on.

Your MS Paint skills are quite impressive :D
For future reference, if you want to take a screen shot of what is displayed on your phone's screen all you have to do is hold the power button and hit the home key. It will save a screen shot to your pictures folder
(you must have the most recent major OTA - Over The Air - software upgrade installed and be on Sprint. Last I read, the non-US version of the Evo 3D did not have this feature)

Your symptoms look very much like a phone with a faulty digitizer rather than a multi-touch issue (this threads topic is multi touch issues - but they are similar and can be co-related). The Digitizer is the touch receptive substrate that interprets electrical touches to the phones display surface which are actively translated and computed by a chip on the system board. If you didn't look at the topic I linked in post #4 you should since I believe it is a bit more applicable to your case.

Ctenorman has given you some great advice. Your first step is to backup the things you would like to save and then perform a factory reset. A factory reset could possibly remedy a software clog and fix the problem. If a factory reset does not work however, if this is a deeper issue or hardware malfunction your best bet will be to get a replacement handset.
Root once you have a stable phone and are ready to experiment, the choice is in your hands.

Inside the People application, if you press the menu key you will see a Import/Export tool that can export your contacts to your MicroSD card. Or if you are feeling saucy you can back them up to your Gmail account (I don't like too much personal info stored there, but to each his own).

I also recommend SMS Backup and Restore on the Market. It is relatively secure and exports your text messages to your SD card in a universal format that can easily be imported back without issue.

As far as Applications and Settings go I like to start fresh and restore/reinstall the essentials one at a time to monitor any conflicts or issues that could occur. I run a lean system and try to keep things simple to avoid software conflicts.

Your SD card will not be wiped unless you tell it to be. Keep a computer back up just in case the inevitable happens. It can also help sometimes to physically remove it from the phone before the reset and re-install it once the reset has occurred and you are running clear again. Take it out of the equation to limit the possibilities. It is also a good opportunity to go through your SD card on the computer and clear out any erroneous files and folders.

Good luck, Hope you get the underlying cause figured out. Post back and let us know how things go.

P.S. Just to double check, Do you have a screen protector or case installed that touches the active display surface?

I got the otter box commuter series about a week ago but the problems had started a week or two before that and i just kind of thought maybe it was acting funky because my old evo 4g would act up sometimes but very rarely to almost never. So i was just thinking and kind of hoping that it was just a random thing and would go away because at first it seemed to and its just kept coming back and escalating to the point of where it is at now

i'll have to try the factory reset i guess ! what exact apps did you suggest to download to back all of my content up on ?

by the way , thanks a lot for the help

and i should add that in the last 24 hours , for some reason now every time i make a call it automatically puts the call on speaker phone for no reason too ... just remembered that, and has just started today probably around 3 O'clock

Ok. So I have had the same problem and here is the fix.

If you have a screen lock program, it has to be disabled to use the multi-touch. I use one called Screen Mode Widget and it has three buttons. First is lock, which is normal mode where you need to slide to unlock, next is unlock, which you can use the volume buttons to open the phone, as well as the power button, and last is screen stay.

It seems that anything that isn’t lock will cause this problem.

The fix is I put the phone into lock mode, then shut the screen off, then turn it on. You will have to slide to unlock (or put a passcode in, depending on how you lock your device) and the multitouch problem is gone. I have been testing this for the past week or so, and it has been working.

So you can either take off the screen lock app, or do like I said and when you need it to be unlocked again just hit the unlock button. But when you want to play a game, or need the multi touch, you need to put it into lock mode again and turn screen off and on.

Let me know if this works guys.

I actually had to return my phone becuase there was a dark spot in the bottom middle. It kind of looked like when you press your finger into a laptop screen. The new screen still ripples a little, but it's not as bad and no dark spots.

I thought perhaps the new screen from HTC would fix the multi touch issue, but it's the lockscreen apps.

See my prior post.

Hi,

I'm the otherwise happy owner of a new Evo 3D. However, for some reason some of the keyboard keys will intermittently stop functioning. Particularly affected are the "E", "L" and "Backspace" buttons. They'll work just fine for a few minutes, then stop working for about 5 seconds, then kick back in again. When they work, they work great. But when they don't...

I've tried a factory reset, but that hasn't fixed it in the long term at least (it came back within a day, and I wasn't typing too much before that). It hasn't been rooted. And I haven't installed any other keyboards except for a wifi keyboard which came with remote web desktop, and I have turned it off. I have installed go launcher ex as a replacement for sense, and swapped out a few apps like sms, but again, it's unrooted.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a faulty device or is it a faulty piece of software causing the problem?

Thank you in advance for any feedback you have on your experiences or thoughts on what it might be!

-------------------

I've tracked down the cause of my strangely behaving keyboard, and the cause oddly enough is the installation of any new lock screen.

Whether it was "no lock", or an alternate lock screen app, the phone's keyboard operated less reliably after doing so. For example, certain keys wouldn't fire for several seconds, in particular the "l", "backspace", and "e" keys. At first I thought I was nuts, but tested it with quite a few lock programs and found the trouble appeared every time I tried a new lock program, and went away without fail every time I removed it.

Could someone else please confirm this behaviour on their phone, and maybe we could submit something to HTC about this, as I'd love to run No Lock on my E3D without compromising touch screen performance. Thanks!

You are correct. If you see my post, there is a way to keep the lock screen app (called Screen Mode Widget). And you can turn it on and off with ease for when you need true multi touch.

Also, if you notice, the dashes don't start until you hit the screen with the second finger. If you get dashes and release for a few seconds, it goes away, but you can only have one slide movment and a pinch to zoom gesture.

Other than that, if you want full multi touch for games and things, you need to unlock or remove the lock app.

Hello everyone. I bought my Evo 3D in July of 2011, and it's been good until about two months or so ago, the touch screen started acting up. Basically when I unlock it, it starts messing around with opening (clicking?) random apps on the screen, and if I try to touch it, it *****es out, or if I'm looking at a picture, it'll start zooming in and out. This happens all the time, but MOSTLY when I'm outside, and it's pretty cold, it acts like it's possessed :(

I went into a Sprint store, and they said because I don't have insurance, it has to go through manufacturer's warranty, and HTC might take a long time to fix it.

Is this common? What do I do?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Why is spaz censored? lol
