Keyboard lag in the stock Messages App (2.1)?

Hi, I have Android 2.1 update running on my Hero, and there is terrible keyboard lag in the stock Messages app for SMS. Am I the only one? Is there a known way to fix this?

I would switch to Handcent. It is free in the market and also has downloadable font packs. It allows speech to text and is just an all around better program.

The main reason I want to stay with the stock SMS app is because I need the notification on bottom of the lockscreen showing who sent the SMS, followed by a short preview. I know that Handcent and ChompSMS do not allow this (or am I wrong?)
