Help Keyboard problem (Htc Inspire)

mindys

Lurker
Ok so I have this weird issue with my keyboard. This is my third Inspire, and my first one had the same problem. I am running LeeDroid 3.3.3 (Android 2.3.3) but I had the same thing happen when the phone was not rooted. The issue is that sometimes when I use the backspace button in texts to delete letters, the button switches functions and for some reason takes me to "Delete by selection" the texts for the person that I am writing the text. It's happening more frequently now and it is getting on my nerves. I tried to kill all the running apps but that didn't help. I also used the Gingerbread Keyboard, but that also had the same issue. I restarted my phone but it still happens. Anyone have any idea why my phone is doing this? Help is MUCH appreciated.

Also, I have noticed that this does not happen if I use the keyboard in portrait mode. As soon as I switch to the landscape mode and press the backspace button the phone immediately goes to "Delete by selection".

I also uploaded a video here:

Hope you can understand my accent :D

This is interesting. I just tried to replicate this on my Inspire and it does the same thing. I'm running GB, not rooted. I tried with the three different keyboards I have and each one does it just as you described. All I can say is that ever since the GB update, the stock messaging app has not worked properly. A lot of little bugs have crept in...I started using Handcent for messaging pretty much once I got the phone (which has only been about two weeks) and haven't had any problems with it. Maybe you might want to try a different messaging app as well.

Mine doesn't go to 'delete by selection' but instead mine will delete the character but then doesn't allow me to type another letter to replace it, it instead will either just be blank instead of the new character showing up or it continues to go backwards and delete the other characters before it.

I love my phone but this issue is starting to make me wanna drink.. and I don't drink! aahhahahahahaha!

Well guys I'm using Go SMS Pro and it seems to not do that anymore. I don't now but the stock keyboard for the message app is messed up I guess. So I'll just stick to this for now since I can't find any other solution that might fix the stock keyboard.

I don't think it's so much the stock keyboard as it is the stock messaging app. I tried this with three different keyboards (stock, Keyboard from GB, & Swype) and each one exhibited the same problem. As I mentioned above, the stock messaging app has had a lot of problems since the GB update. The best solution seems to be to just use a different app for messaging.

I don't have anything new to add but I have the exact same problem with the back button taking me to the deletion screen. I started another post because I could not find this one and I was given the link to this thread in which I will be monitoring in the event someone finds a solution. My issue also started post update along with the incoming text phone number displayed and not the contact name.

Yes my phone does the same thing. I am at the point where I dont even want the phone anymore. I found that by restarting the messaging app when this happens that it will work properly. Then again I shouldnt have to do this every time I want to text somebody. It only started doing this when the new update came out.

More issues with the calendar as well since the new update.

I found that when I have the calendar widget up and I want to add an event; I will click on the 28 of September but when I am in the screen to edit even (add times, name of event, etc.) the day is the 29th of September!

Try that out and see if you also have the same problem with the calendar.

I am having the same issue...I've been thinking it was me, so I am glad to see other people are experiencing the same thing. IT IS DEFINITELY DRIVING ME INSANE!!!! Sometimes I want to throw my phone out of a moving car, it's annoying. I hope someone can provide a "fix".

When trying to backspace during a text, my text gets sent to draft. Anyone else having this problem? If so, any ideas on how to fix it?

I'm disappointed that we haven't received an update for the texting issues. Are we just going to have to deal with it until it's time for a phone upgrade? I don't know that I will buy another HTC if this is what I am expected to deal with in the future. I loved the phone out of the box but I feel like the update crippled it and nobody plans on correcting it.

I did find that if I hold my phone in landscape mode BEFORE opening the Messages app and texting that I can backspace to correct my messages without a problem. It helps out when I remember to do this. Does this little adjustment work for anyone else?

At this point, I don't expect any type of update to correct these issues. With a new phone coming out seemingly every month and with ICS coming, I doubt any eyes at HTC are looking at this phone any longer. I suspect the next "official" update this phone would get would be to update to ICS and that may never come for the Inspire.

Workarounds for these issues have been discussed over and over. Personally I don't understand why someone would rather deal with the frustration using the stock app and wait for an "fix" than just install a different messaging app that doesn't have these issues. Or just root your phone and install a custom ROM. You'll get more response from the devs at xda than you'll ever get waiting for HTC or ATT.

I can understand where you are coming from but I don't feel that I should have to root my phone or install 3rd party apps in order to get my phone working as it should. I can't seem to find a messaging app that I am happy with. The stock app would be perfect if it functioned as it did before the update.

I get that. It's not unreasonable to expect things to work as they are supposed to. But unfortunately the stock messaging app after the GB update just doesn't. And although I quoted your post earlier, my comment was more generally directed to those saying how frustrated they are with the problems with the app and how it's driving them crazy while waiting for a "fix", which you were not one of. So my apologies if my earlier post came off sounding like a criticism directed at you.

I didn't start using a 3rd party messaging app, or root my phone for that matter, to fix any problems I was having. I just like having the ability to customize things to work and look how I want them to, not just how they are supposed to. Not everyone needs to have that.

Since most of these problems occurred with the GB update, there is always the option to revert back to Froyo when things were running fine. Using the same hack kit used to root the phone you can restore the phone to how it was out of the box. You will not be rooted and the phone will function how it did before the update. You'll lose the data that's on the phone and you'll need to reinstall your apps.

But if you were going to go through that trouble might as well go forward and root and find a rom that works for you.

I wish that HTC or AT&T (my carrier) would offer some type of an exchange allowing us to switch to a different phone that currently runs GB without these annoyances. I don't want to come across as someone that is only here to complain as that's not my intention.

I do think it's bad business to sell me a new phone (which works perfectly) and then send me an update that makes the phone less functional without any word on an additional update. If this same scenario were to occur after a software update on a different type of product (television, or blu-ray player, etc.) most companies would have steps in place to accommodate the customer with a working replacement, a different model, or assurance of another update fix). Has anyone attempted to request this from HTC or their provider? As I said...I really like the phone but it's not the functioning phone I originally purchased after the buggy update.

Same dang problem here with a stock Inspire... ::le sigh::

Not sure about everyone else but I did just notice a tweak for this probem: (1) when having the keyboard open in portrait style--if you start typing and then decide to switch to landscape [with what you just typed still in the texting field] the use of 'backspace' will 100% dysfunction towards the 'delete by selection' screen every time you switch from portrait to landscape with text already in the texting field. (2) If you just simply open up the keyboard in portrait then switch to landscape without any text in the texting field, all will function normally.

Also, this goes for opening up draft-texts as well: try to position the phone so that the draft will auto' open in landscape form and things should function normally. If you open the draft in portrait then switch to landscape, the same problem will occur.

Hope this helps! Cheers! (>'')>
