keylayout file for HP Touchpad keyboard

Hi folks,
I'm really liking the One S.... using it for many things including SSH-ing into linux servers to manage them remotely - for that reason I bought a bluetooth keyboard (the HP TouchPad bluetooth keybaord)

The default key mappings are generally ok, but not quite right... it's a UK layout, but is translated as a US --- e.g. the @ symbol and back slash and pipe characters are in the wrong place. Having done some reading, it looks like I need to have the correct key layout file in /system/usr/keylayout, with configuration to match this piece of hardware. - see here Key Layout Files | Android Open Source

But do I really need to root the device to install a new keylayout file?

That seems a bit drastic.

I can see an app in the store that will translate key strokes into what I need, but that seems a bit of a messy solutiion.

Does anyone know of a good way to set this up without rooting the phone? THANKS!

Edited to add... this guide is what I originally wanted to follow, till I realised I;d need to have a rooted phone... http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/t...layout-any-usb-bluetooth-keyboard-rooted.html
