Help Kies and Odin

I am not a techie and don't understand the complexities of firmware etc!!

I have a Galaxy S3 bought from a friend about 2 weeks back. The friend had done a factory reset and the phone has worked fine for me. Yesterday the battery went dead and I plugged in the mains charger. The battery symbol on the phone showed that it was not charging at all. I put my battery into a friend's S3 and it has fully charged.

Put the charged battery back into my phone and switched it on - it brings up the battery icon - but shows that the battery is dead.

I have followed some instructions I found on here about holding down the power button plus home plus volume and I then get either a screen showing something about 'Downloading to target' and talks about 'ODIN' or if I hit the volume button the other way plus on plus home it brings a message about downloading a Custom OS - hit volume up to continue or volume down to 'cancel/restart phone'.

I have downloaded Kies to my laptop and connected the phone via USB - but after a while it says that it cannot connect.

I have downloaded ODIN - but don't have a clue what to do with it nor where to start.

Can anyone help please?

Maybe it got bricked somehow? Have you tried putting a battery from a different S3 into your S3? Or it's the cable?

Just to be clear here mate. Is it just that the icon isn't showing charging or the phone wont turn on? What happens when you try, does anything come up on the screen? Does it loop or just keep trying to load? Cheers and don't do anything in recovery or download mode yet :thumbup:
