Help kies help

I am trying to use kies to download photos from my phone. i select the photos, and click download. it says i need to download java.. hm, i already have java, i thought. i go ahead an install it anyway. then it asks me if i want to re-install it. what is going on here? does kies run on a certain java version?

Are you using KiesAir or are you physically connecting the phone to your computer and using the desktop Kies program that you can download from the Samsung website?
