Help Kies Not Talking to Note...?

Just got my Note.. Downloaded Kies and it told me a firmware update was available, so I downloaded that. Tried to download an app and was told to go to Applications on phone - OK, then click 'My Files' - OK, then "find and run apk file of the application downloaded from downloads folder in SamsungAppsKies then it will be installed to the device..."

Errr, what..?? That meant nothing at all to me, there is no SamsungAppsKies under 'My Files' and I simply do not understand that phrase.
I think something is awry, and I suspect my computer and the Note are not talking, and yes, they were connected by the USB cable..
Can anyone more familiar with this help out, please?

This must be your first Android.
To download an application, use the app called play store on your Note.
Once launch it will take you to the Google Play store. There you can download/purchase all the apps to your hearts content.

So.

First you said you downloaded a firmware update.

STOP.

did you install the update? Was it a note firmware update, (like the phone installed it and rebooted - this would have taken at least 5 minutes where the phone was not available to you) or was it KIES saying it needs a KIES update for future firmware management on the Note?

I also have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc but haven't done much with it, though I've downloaded a few apps OK. On Kies, it asks which phone you have, so of course I entered a Note. It quickly told me a firmware update was required and the download took about half an hour but I have a very slow speed here (Scottish Highlands) 0.8 - 2.3 mb/sec. The phone line is long and old... I don't know if the phone installed it, nothing had changed and the OS version remained the same 2.3.6. There's no 3G coverage here, the normal cellphone signal is weak and there's none in most parts of the house, usually have to stand near the window in the direction of the transmitter... Kies didn't say it needed the update, just that one was available. I believe I had the phone connected when I downloaded Kies, was this wrong? Should I delete Kies and download again? Thanks for help, me old fart, not computer nerd!
