Help Kies upgrade doesn't work

Hi, I have a SGS2 and I never upgraded the firmware. I try and do it via Kies, but it says that it either can't backup or the connection is lost. ARGH! I've looked for other solutions, but can't find anything for my phone type. It's a SGS2 T989. It has the original stock firmware. Def not ice cream sandwich. It's getting buggy, so any help upgrading would be very appreciated!

If you can't get Kies to work, you can use Odin to update to the latest Jellybean firmware. Just follow this guide.

Have you tried a different USB cable when using Kies? Sometimes they can be temperamental.
