Help Killing Tasks Dosen't work

I didn't realise that program works with MMC2 - handy.

I got so p!ssed off with the process, that I thought I'd give it a go...

From memory, the goldcard tool is for the Desire, not the Desire HD. I think the options are MMC0 and MMC1... I put the reverse MMC2 number I got from the goldcard helper (that I had downloaded from the market) and it must've worked, as my goldcard allowed me to downgrade and then root!

I had been reading so many posts on google that all SD cards don't work/try mount/unmount of SD card after formatting it, try Kingston 2GB card that works and use a SD card reader instead of phone etc etc..

However, the problem I think for all those who get CID incorrect message is that the patching of the goldcard IMG is not correctly happening with the use of Hex tool hence the bootloader always rejects it saying Invalid CID. This PC tool correctly patches the IMG to the card reader and it was accepted in the first attempt by bootleader...

Thanks a lot and I'm now rooted, got rid of all the bloatware from Orange and also upgraded to 2.2.1 unbranded version 1.72.405.

One last question, I paid 13 GBP to unlock my phone, had I rooted it myself, had I saved that money or the SIM lock would still had to be taken away by the unlock process ?

What you have done so far would not have unlocked the phone - firmware has no relation to the network lock. However, it is possible to use a root exploit to unlock the phone to different networks.

OK, I really wanted to post it in another thread but thought let me post it here.

One of the main purpose of rooting was also to be able to remove apps that I don't want. So for e.g. News/Peep, I still don't see the 'Uninstall' button enabled for these apps when I force stop them.

Anything further I need to do to have full control over my menu items/apps in the list

You need a 3rd party app to remove it. I recommend Titanium Backup (which you can get from the market). The app is designed for backing up apps, but it can also uninstall/freeze system apps. Once you've installed it, you'll need to hit the 'Problems?' button on the main screen to let it install busybox.

I would check here before you remove stuff though - some things you'd expect you could remove are actually very important to the phone. (E.g. uninstall google talk and the market breaks).

I think I know what's gone wrong, but it probably isn't what you want to hear

When you install new firmware, like doing the 2.2.1 update you did, you replace all the system files. That includes all the root related files and essentially means you're back to square one.

When you need to do is downgrade to 2.2 again. Now at this point you can either:

a) Stick with 2.2 and root it using visionary.
b) Upgrade to 2.2.1 then 2.3 OTA
c) Switch to custom firmware.

If you plan to do b or c, then you need to do some ground work first. Specifically, as it mentions at the bottom of the downgrade tutorial, the next step is to get radio S-Off on the phone.

2.2.1 and 2.3 are patched against the method used to root 2.2 (only temp-root is possible), but once you have S-Off, the phone is more vulnerable to root exploits and you can gain permanent root on 2.3. I'm not sure if you can get permanent root on 2.2.1, even with S-Off, but you can definitely get it on 2.3.

You're on an unbranded firmware now so 2.3 should be available in your country - you might have to grab the RUU from the sticky in the main Desire HD section if not.

I'm sorry for not clarifying this all earlier - should've spotted it when you said you'd gone to 2.2.1

Any harm/drawbacks in following step (a) ? so I repeat creating a goldcard and downgrading to 2.2 and then load visionary that I believe will give permanent root...
If B & C are complicating the perm root process then I prefer not to as somehwere it's written that chances of bricking the phone is higer in this process so dont want to risk...

Do I loose any features/benefits/risks if I follow step (a) ?

OK, I tried method "A" using visionary + and it worked all OK and I had permanent root. I then went to the link provided above for stock and unbranded ROM's http://androidforums.com/htc-desire-hd/196270-htc-desire-hd-useful-links-files.html and flashed the phone with Gingerbread 2.3.3.

I lost root again, so guess it was expected ? In which case, is there a gingerbread ROM that I can install and also retain root access ? I just want to switch to GB as I have read a thread here that many people are reporting better battery performance on this OS as compared to old versions. If I try the other link provided above for custom ROM's Desire HD Index - Everything Desire HD is Here! [Updated June 27th!!] - xda-developers , which one should I select for my phone DHD ?

My objective is to be able to run Titanium backup (requiring root to remove Peep, news etc system apps) and also be on gingerbread to try out any battery performance improvement so what's the best combination for me as a end user alone ?

Im currently rooted with visionary and on 2.2 build 1.32 and was a great experience to get rid of system default app using titanum backup.

Depends what you're looking for? LeeDroid is a popular choice, it's virtually stock with a few performance tweaks/mods and some Sense 3.0 stuff included now too. Android Revolution HD is similar.

CM7 is another popular one. It's vanilla Android and pretty basic in parts, but it's worth giving a try.

I was on LeeDroid, but switched back to CM7 last week. You've done the difficult bit, you can switch between custom ROMs with relative ease now you've done all the hard work.

OK so I guess both CM7 and LeeDriod are available for download on the custom ROM's link Desire HD Index - Everything Desire HD is Here! [Updated June 27th!!] - xda-developers and not the official ones. Can I just ask out of curosity ? What's the diff in custom and official ones? I mean what makes a custom ROM get the status of a official/stock ROM? Any links to read more info will be great help.

Secondly, will Sense 3.0 be inbuild in LeeDriod as you state above that includes this stuff or a UI that's also available for download on other ROMS like mine on 2.2 ?

Yeah, they should both be there although if you have ROM Manager installed, you can get CM7 from within ROM Manager.

LeeDroid is there too, but it doesn't download/perform his recommended EXT4 Wipe as far as I'm aware.

Official means from HTC so unless the ROM is an RUU, it's classed as custom and won't be supported by HTC themselves, it will be supported by the author though. It will never get the status of official/stock. When I said LeeDroid was virtually stock, I meant that he's taken the official Desire HD release from HTC and tweaked it to his own liking. CM7 is based on the bare, Android 2.3.3 source code from Google and tweaked to work on the DHD. Hopefully that makes sense!

I'm not sure what Lee's ROM includes now, I sort of lost interest with it circa version 3.2.1 and haven't updated since. From memory, it came with the Sense 3.0 lockscreen and the SMS app. There are mods you can use to remove/add some of the fancier Sense 3.0 stuff though.
