KitKit completely borks Note 3's.

HothTron

Newbie
A long time Note series owner who switched to T-Mobile from ATT last week and got myself a great Note 3 and in my stupidity, I downloaded Kit Kat and its been nothing but issues. I'm seeing who else is having this problem as i'm hearing across the web that lots of people are having problems with Kit Kat in general. But the biggest one is battery life.
Why is the KitKat update eating up nearly half my battery life with ? What have you done to my new Note 3? It's 3 days old! My Note 2 and 1 ran and lasted longer then this!

Yes, i've done the following

1. Cleared partition cache
2. Exchanged phone at the store, twice.
3. Tried with and without A-Data SD card
4. Factory reset and rebuilding after Kit Kat update
5. Forcefully stopping Knox and Lookout from running in background
6. Yanked out battery and reinstalled

Don't even get me started on the WiFi issues, I am not able to maintain wireless stability at my home or work wireless both 2.4ghz and 5ghz are completely all over the place. I've even gone into service mode and disabled Wifi Sleeping entirely and I STILL have wireless connection drops. I am REALLY not happy T-Mobile. I left being a customer of AT&T of over 2 years and wanted to give you a chance with your services and I would really appreciate you owning up to this and get our Note 3's fixed!

Have you tried starting in safe mode and also checking the sync frequencies of the various apps (including the bloatware)?

In your second photo it shows the the phone is staying awake a app is running or you didn't set the screen time out how long did u have the device for and do u keep the WiFi enable or disabled til you need it

Huh?

Yes, screen time out is set for 30 seconds and I leave wifi enabled all the time

No not a good move with WiFi on all the time. If the WiFi doesn't have a connection it will keep searching . sort of like a hungry person you wont stop til you find something to eat using the energy you have to find a meal. . I learned the hard way charged my phone woke up said I play with it at work . hahaha got to work what was 100% when I went to work was there for 4 hours so my phone was on for 5 hours total. I was at 45%:D and I didn't have the charger but had the car charger . so watch the WiFi turn off til u want to use .

I would start over and do another update over the update you just did.

google "odin3 v 3.09" and also google the t-mobile kitkat patch for note 3. Download them both. Use odin3 to install the patch again.

I'm getting insane battery life. Unplug it from charger at 7AM and by 8PM at still at 85% with moderate usage.

Uhhhhh I must have missed the memo somewhere. I have the Verizon note 3 and my battery stats always look like that. I must be doing something wrong here. I thought that's just how it always was. Getting 15 percent from 8 to 7 is unimaginable.

I read an issue with Skype launching the bug which is killing the battery. Try uninstalling it? I've done just that last night......at least til its fixed

Right after the update I had issues with Google+ maxing the CPU out. I uninstalled all of its updates and turned it off, and that seems to have handled it.

I've also read things about camera shortcuts causing it, whether you have one on your lockscreen or on the homescreen. Before I took the update I deleted my shortcuts.

Don't feel bad about applying the update. When I got the notification, I kept postponing it, one day at a time (the most it would let me postpone it). Last week the postpone button greyed out; every time I woke the phone up it was nagging me to update, so I broke and did it; I wish I could go back.

I hate software nags. If I say "no, I don't want to do that", then ******* listen to me and quit asking. I don't care if Jesus Christ himself returns and says "all who do not update their phones will be owned by the Russian mob and be cast down into the fires of Hell", if I don't want to update I don't want to f'in update.

To turn off the system update notification click your phone's menu button from the homes screen and then choose "manage apps" from the new menu that pops up.

Then you will be taken to a new screen with the words "Running", "Downloaded" and "All" at the top. Swipe your hand left or right until the word "All" is at the top of the screen and in the center position.

Now scroll downwards to the list of applications and look for "Google services framework".

Click onto the name "Google services framework" then you will be taken to a new screen with an option ticked called "show notifications". Untick / uncheck the box next to "show notifications" so that it is empty. Now you shouldn't get any system update notifications.

I honestly think most bugs are alot to do with carrier software, or maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. When the carriers receive the update from Samsung they seem too trigger happy to add lots of bloatware without thinking about their customers first.
As long as they get their branding etc on your phone, it irrelevant if the thing breaks down every 5 minutes!

I couldn't agree with more with evohicks above. Our international versions (SM-N9005) of the Note 3 are very different to any of the US versions that have carrier branding. So much different I have started to refrain from offering advice if I see the questioner has a Note 3 other than the international SM-N9005 version.

I went through 3 pages on Google using the search term "t-mobile kitkat patch for note 3". I found no mention of it. Could you post a link Bodycount? Not that I'm having any problems or anything, I just like to read about that kind of stuff.

The only thing that stopped my excessive battery drain after the update was turning off mobile data for a few hours.

Once I re-enabled it my phone has gone back to performing like it did before the update.

Mobile data seemed to be the only thing that was affecting me. I did use that time to uninstall apps I was no longer using.

I saw someone above mentioned it's no good to leave wifi on all the time- I NEVER turn mine off. Not with this phone & not with the Note 2.

I can't think of any phone I've had in the past 7+ yrs in which wifi put a drain/strain on my battery.

Mine will. If I leave wifi on overnight, that sucker will practically drain my Note 3. I have to turn it off overnight. Now my Droid Maxx I had was just the opposite. I had to leave Wifi on or it would drain. This sucker's just the opposite....

I leave my WiFi on 24x7, I've never turned it off except when I've had to fly and put it 'Airplane' mode and even then on the Southwester flight I was on had WiFi and I could turn it on and use it even then.

So practically I've never had WiFi impact any phone that I've used regardless of model.

I've also found that if I have WiFi enable, that my note 3 will switch from Mobile data to WiFi whenever I get within range of a known WiFi hot spot to simplify and reduce data usage and power.

Now, especially with AT&T and the 4.4.2 update it has improved quite a bit even more, so no real complaints about anything right now.
