Klingo & Vroot... bad?

I never did find a link for Google Play that even worked, so I'm learning to live with Mobo -- at least it really does have an Ignore button. Couldn't get my old Play APKs to work either. Tried updating other things I've been ignoring and ran out of memory again, just like the good old days. Part of the problem, I admit, is that I'm cramming too much into this feeble device.

I'm tempted to try Kingo's Remove Root button at this point...

I bought a new phone on Saturday, came with something called "Ke Ke Market", which would not do me. But then that's pretty much what's available around these parts. However I chose a phone that suited what I required, and more importantly was easy to root by following a 6 minute YouTube video but not Kingo or Vroot though, and get Google working on it. Really because I do need Play, Contacts and Calendar....need Google Play to install the Android Forums app for a start...LOL.

Never know you've got 'til it's gone... now that I've trashed Play, I might unroot, do a factory reset, rebuild my arsenal, reroot and be a lot more careful about what I throw away... another day to be well wasted.

I've spent a few weeks perusing many phones in stores, and looking at internet sites, including AF  , watching YouTube, etc. Before spending any money. I had an idea of what I required, a flagship high-specced smart-phone, but budget was a factor as well. In the end I chose an Oppo Find 7a, which is Chinese.

Nice choice mate. I've seen people complaining about the OS but I think there's a custom recovery and it's only a matter of time before it sees some nice roms if it hasn't already.
I know Alex Cruz from the Dirty Unicorn team has one so that's a good sign :)
Think Derek Ross from phandroid has one too

It has something called ColorOS, which is a rather customised version of JB 4.3. This phone has only been out for a few weeks. However it's been heavily advertised on TV here, and the main carriers have it in stock and is readily available, quite unlike it's somewhat related brother, the OnePlus One. TWRP recovery is supported and works. Shouldn't be too long before there's a fully supported version of CyanogenMod, Omni and MIUI available, like there is for it's predecessor, the Find 5.

Lol@ the oneplus!
I think their whole campaign has been very arrogant and misguided. The whole putting down of other manufacturers then the invite thing and now the smashing of perfectly good phones!!
Even the fact it runs CM seems to be putting off a lot of its intended customers ;)

EMERGENCY... for lack of a better term

1. I unrooted, to start over. Apparently, having deleted files like Play Store and whatever, the phone asked me to log in then died; just showed the blue TracFone splash. So I convinced myself that's a good thing, ran to Walmart and bought a ZTE savvy, bigger screen, newer, etc.

2. I transferred my service from my dead phone on the Straight Talk website. That went fine and they told me to call some Verizon number to lock it in. Trying to call to activate the phone, it said I was roaming, in the middle of town. I fell for a fifteen dollar card so I could buy some roam time, got put on hold for ten minutes and gave up.

3. So I figured I'd just work on the gmail activation -- In all my years of droiding, I never used wifi, even once, figured it was someone else's problem. So, obviously, I know nothing about it. Trying login my gmail, it insists on me choosing a wifi terminal. They all demand a password, which of course I don't know... what the hell do I do?

4. I suppose I'll go back to Walmart tomorrow morning and see if anyone can help, but this is insane -- my fourth droid sets me back to my infancy.

If you're de-Googling a device, you have to be very careful with what files you delete, or you could end-up with a brick or a boot-loop.

You have to be connected to the internet to login to Gmail. Haven't you got a Starbucks, McDonald's or KFC or something nearby, they usually have open, free WiFi.

Will probably give my final judgement on OnePlus in about 5-6 weeks time, and that is whether I can go into the local China Mobile store and buy one. Without having to order in advance, waiting for an invite, winning a golden ticket, smashing my existing phone, or whatever.

Apparently many people smashed their iPhones and Galaxys on YouTube in the hope that OnePlus would sell them a phone for a dollar.

That was me trying to be stupid... success!

Thing to remember here when doing this kind of low-level system stuff, especially if one is used to how Windows works, there's no recycle bin or trash can, and depending on the tool, no warnings either. You delete something, that's it, it's gone forever. May not realise it was something essential until you reboot the device.

An unrooted Android device is more or less the same as "No user serviceable parts inside.", you go delving in there, you are expected to know what you're doing. And is very important to have a working recovery method, in case something gets screwed up.

Well put. But it helped make the day unusual.

Just to be clear I was talking about the dummys who smashed up their high end phones in the hope of winning another, cheaper one, not you lol :D

For what it's worth I bricked (or thought I'd bricked) my first Android, gave it to my nephew as a toy and bought a new one, all because I didn't fully understand what I was doing to it.
If I knew then what I know now I'm sure I could easily have fixed it but it's a lesson learned

I've done it myself, bricked a portable media player. Trying to update the firmware using a tool that was only in Chinese, before I started learning Chinese. Selected the wrong option, didn't realise and oops, that was the end of that....LOL!

there's no recycle bin or trash can

Using System App Remover, I had to delete stuff first from the regular list and again from the deleted list, so as I see it, there was a trash can of sorts that I was tired of respecting.

And just to be clear, I did very stupid things and I didn't care because I was sick of that tiny, gutless phone. Now it makes a handy, tiny clock in the menu bar, but that's it.

Oh well, I guess I chose an original way to get a new phone: root the old phone, brick it it -- practically on purpose -- then buy a new one.

The Savvy, compared to the Ascend, is amazing. My arsenal, which filled the Ascend to the edge, only uses about a quarter of space available on the Savvy. Then I updated everything, even that mandatory crap I never use, and that still leaves more space than I ever had before.

Will I root the Savvy? Probably will someday, but I have no reason to now. Appreciate all your help and sarcasm...

You might be right -- there's three little things, two of which I can do nothing, one just a Google thing:

The USB cable plugs into the side, not the bottom -- it's the principle!.
The screen has to be held/viewed just so, or it fades out.
Google Play Music appears on wakeup, sometimes, nothing in settings.

Otherwise, I'm still amazed.

Yeah my 1st Android was a ZTE and it plugged in at the side. Do they still have power button at the top lol? What's the specs of that phone? I'll always have a place in my heart for ZTE :)
For good viewing angle on a screen the Samsung AMOLED displays are excellent
