Root Know the name of private/restricted caller---esteem

Many of you may know this, but, for those who don't this is how you can see the name of a private/restricted call you just answered:

This works on:
-not rooted, stock
-rooted, stock
-rooted, custom?<---Need confirmation (i dont feel like restoring a custom rom save :D)

-ok, so you just answered a private/restricted call and you are on the phone with the caller.
-hit home
-pull down the notification/status bar
-BAM! can you see the name?

The above didnt work?
Dial *65 (this enables screen it which is included on your price plan), then try all the steps again.

In theory, *67 is supposed to block your number when you call someone private, but no necessarily your name, even though it does so on most handsets. I'm assuming, due to Screen It (Metro PCS and other carriers' feature) is the reason why we can see the name on the Esteem. The first phone with this ability that i remembered was the Kyocera Strobe (Metro's first phone with QWERTY keyboard)

problem for me is I have the habit of not answering calls if they do not list the number. Too bad it doesnt work until you answer the call :/

i tend to do the same, but now im answering them all, i check the name, run it in my system, find out the number, suspend it lmao.

so while being on call with some1 thats using *67 its possible to see name or number? wow thanks for that tip im gonna have to try it.

edit: seems it dosnt work for me dunno why. maybe it was a fluke for you. maybe some1 else can verify this.

There isnt really a time restriction as in how fast or when to hit home and drag notif bar dow. Is your screen it feature active? Dial *65, ull here a few short tones. Then try to see if you can see it now

does it has to be rooted? i will try this for sure; I "hate" when somebody hide the number/name; if this work for stock phone, I'll tell the person identity when I receive the phone then I am sure they will....what...? how do u know bla..bla...

i have to confirm that this works wheres the thank button i just dial *65 it called heard dial tone it hung up i had my girl friend call me block incoming call was blocked but when status bar scroll down i could see it was her calling me i did it on her phone to and it worked and she not rooted and im rooted

ive had a couple of people call me that i know and they have been in front of me show that i can show them its not a app and it works good so if u get alot of prank call try this but i suggest dialing *65 first then trying it out cause thats how it worked for me

Walk me through, lets see what you're doing....

...what happens after you dial *65? do you hear the tones? (it should sound just like when you're on the phone talking to someone already and someone calls you on the other line and then hangs up)

try this: dial *85, which normally disables screen it (you should hear the same tone), hang up; then *65 to enable it, then hang up. Now have someone call you private and follow my guide. that should do it.

if that doesn't work take it into a corp store, have them try the same thing on their esteems (im pretty sure someone in there owns the phone), i'm dying to see what they tell you.

I'm rooted and I use a call blocker that blocks all private/restricted calls. That way I don't have to worry about "who" is calling. Because no one that blocks their caller ID is actually calling me. Stops that mess in its tracks.

It was something cool to post and talk about. Some people may still fund it useful

well chazz didnt mean its not useful he just giving his 2 centz like i do about the typical scenario with *67 calls. only reason i was interested in this was beacause someone last week called me *67 2wice in one night and i was still wondering who it was i did answer but person just hanged up. anyways if this is indeed a stable exploit it could be exploited further and im sure a dev could make a program that does it without us hitting home and bringing down the status bar and could reveal the name of caller right there on the call screen.

stop co-signing for that man :D

naw, but that'll be cool if a dev dedicated his time to make something like taht for rooted handsets

Thanks for explaining for me. Yes, the geekiness of the method described above is cool. I was not criticizing the method.

I was just saying if it's driving someone crazy who is calling and not revealing their number... another option is just not to receive those calls.

Thus, I have a root call blocker that automatically hangs up on them before my phone even rings once. In the microsecond the call is connecting, my root call blocker interrupts the call.

From past experience I've found that most people who try to block their numbers to call you are NOT your friends trying to call you -- or even your ex-girl friends. They are usually companies dialing via robotic calling software and they are either trying to sell you something or trying to collect a debt they think you owe.

I quickly tired of explaining, no I don't want your product, no I am not that person. So, they just never, never, ever, ever, ever call me anymore -- as my root call blocker takes care of it.

I DO have it set to "log" attempts, which I check occasionally, but if I wanted true peace of mind I should set it so it doesn't even do that. ;)

i just tryed this on my optimus and it works with rooted custom (mine) and non rooted stock (wifes) cool find! thanks!
