Kony 2012

is not a scam, even if you dont want to donate money at least spread the word and let people know who this guy is...

How is it not a scam? The charity is skeevy at best. The problem was resolved before Obama took office. The solution they propose is funding a corrupt army. How is this not a scam?

I watched the video and have read about the campaign.

A few things I am fuzzy on.

How does he plan to stop this guy? Is he building an army? Does he expect western powers to do it for him? Where does the money go?

If he expects western powers to use military force to stop him and won't be leading the fight himself (he looks physically able) then he is just another war drum beater in my opinion.

I never knew so many of my friends were in favour of so much liberal interventionism. About half of them who are opposed to the intervention in Afghanistan and got upset when hearing that the US dropped bombs on the Serbs.
He's not even in Uganda now, and has been largely crushed there. Also its a amusing how pro Ugandan government the piece is, isnt that the country where gays are executed?

just FYI, I'm all for liberal interventionism, and the US has 100 troops training Ugandan Army troops. So we (the West), are doing enough on *that* front. I dont see people pushing for the West to send 50,000 paratroopers into Sudan, now there's a place we are doing nowt for.

Didn't you see the post above? He's going to send 2 men, a dwarf, an elf, a wizard, and 4 "little people".....like DUH!

I think that some people just want so hard to be a part of some sort of cause. They hear their relatives talk about marching for civil rights, against the war in Vietnam, partying at woodstock, etc. I personally find a lot of it played out. The "trend" that irritates me the most however, has to be the "sit in line overnight for the latest apple product/black Friday deal" since it demonstrates our country's gluttonous consumerism. The sad part is when someone is trampled to death by hundreds looking to save a few bucks on a TV.

They are advocating that we funnel our money into the Ugandan military (a known corrupt organization that has done many of the same things Kony has done) and that we kill this guy. That's what they're advocating.

Kony = Evil murderer of innocents who needs to be erased at ALL costs!

Saddam = Eh, who was that again?

I think if something was done about Saddam when he was actually murdering on masse something else would've happened. Of course, instead the *entire* world armed him to fight against Iran. In Desert Storm he was never deposed (Although, I'm sure lots would've objected). Instead he was toppled in 2003 for basically no good reason. You generally get rid of these guys when they're been bad (Gadaffi, for example), not while they are being docile and enjoy some support.

Yeah I guess its people wanting to fit in and have the craic. Ireland and much of northen Europe also tends to be great for jumping on the old focused charity bandwagon, like LiveAid and such.

Well, I'm not sure the Ugandan military kidnap children, but yeah. Still, Ugandan military > crazy purposeless warlord

Even you are talking out of both sides of your mouth. You ridicule the US for giving aid to Saddam decades ago in our combined efforts against Iran now you want us to do the exact same thing in Uganda? Seriously?!? WTF?!? This is exactly what I'm talking about. Saddam was taken out of power for many reasons and not the least of which was his systematic elimination of certain groups of people (English majors will know the word that is the definition for that is tied to one of the worst tragedies on a civilian people) but people whine that we shouldn't go to war. We shouldn't support other people in their wars against dictators and try to assert democracy that isn't wanted. Then, in the SAME breath you want us to do everything in our power to eliminate this Kony *****e.

Seriously, which is it?!? The hippies are so blind to reality that they no longer contradict themselves over decades but now they do it in the same breath.

They may not kidnap children. I don't know. They do their share of raping and pillaging though so that's OK I guess. We should definitely fund that.

The U.S. had no problem with Saddam's atrocities because he also had no love for Iran. Once he invaded Kuwait because he claimed they were selling oil at ridiculously low prices, the U.S. felt compelled to act. I personally don't think the U.S. should be in the nation building business.

You assume I think the US should be nation building.

I only stated that the people crying for justice in Uganda and financial support to Uganda are the same people who cry for us to get out of Iraq and say we had no business being there before or should have never supported them financially. I guess those African babies & children look cuter than Curd babies and children and therefore are more worthy of our financial and military support?

If you're going to stand for something and fight for it with anyone who will listen I just think you should know what it is you're clamoring and fighting so fervently in support of and then apply that to ALL instances and not just the ones that serve your current mode or social popularity.

I think you need to read my post again. They were both bad men. My point regarding Iraq was off topic, pointing out that things were done at a ridiculous time. I'm not calling for massive action against this Kony guy *at all*. I said we're doing enough.

Probably, seems likely that they would. I'm not one for direct funding, paying for boots on the ground seems more logical

That's a fairly good summary, although it was the entire 1st and 2nd world rather than just the US in the first case
