Phone theft is out of control and a lot of people are shrugging their shoulders saying what can you do?

My niece had her phone stolen from her hands on the train here first week of college as a freshman. Today we were informed that the transit police have not only caught the culprit, but have returned the phone!

Good job, fellas!

that is awesome!!!!yeah my friend had her phone stolen a few years back and she had to fill out a paper form. she never heard back again from the police. so this is good news to here.

Glad she got her phone back. With my luck they would catch the culprit but have to keep my phone as evidence. As slowly as the cogs of justice turn... when I got my phone back it would be a joke.

All she had to do was identify the girl who grabbed it. They didn't need the evidence because they had caught the whole thing on the security cameras.

I love a good ending. There needs to be much more of this. Phones are just the right size to snatch and go... and have some big value. No wonder their theft is on the rise. I wouldn't mind seeing some provider involvement on the recover level vs just gladly removing the device from one's plan. Something needs to give... I'm sure the law enforcement feels helpless in most cases.

One of my many daughters had her cell stolen a couple of years back. She was very certain who took it.. from a party atmosphere. When she contacted the police they bluntly told her there was nothing they could do without a witness etc. Her bf at the time and a couple of his buddies recovered her phone for her. That can be a tricky situation and they were lucky it turned out well.

DC has quite a problem with cell phone theft on the Metro. My favorite city blog always had posts like props to the cops about folks who are caught about that or anything else.

It's weird that you have to be in a place like that to get 'the best chance of recovering your stolen phone'. It's a bit like Oxford St in London; they have eagle eyes for pick pockets amongst thousands of people. I suppose when you know what you're looking for it is easier but the sheer information computing power of the brain is amazing :) .

How many years after graduation was it returned? :p

Glad she got it back!!!!

Had a friend who's beater car was stolen from in front of his house in Queens many years ago. He did all the proper reporting (His dad is a retired NYPD Lieutenant). He checked in with the precinct periodically for several months, eventually giving up on the cars return. A year later he got a collection notice from a Bronx storage yard for $9700.00(the old corolla wasn't worth $1000). Turns out the police recovered the car 4 hours after it was stolen, but never reported it properly. The legal cost alone for recovering the car from the lot was many times the cars value. He made a deal with the storage yard to sign over the car and avoid the hassle of them suing him, then he suing the NYPD for the storage fees. To get the car back, he would have had to pay the $9700, then sue the NYPD for it. If he was able to win the suit, he was looking at 7-10 years before he would be reimbursed.

The wheels of justice turn slowly, but eventually they will run you over.
