Help Kyocera Hydro Edge Storage issues

I just purchased this hydro through Sprint and I am in no way new to smartphones or android but I cant figure this phone out. It tells me I have 1 GB of internal storage and I have a 4 GB SD card installed. I really dont have many apps or pictures and my phone tells me that I have insufficient storage to install updates or new apps. I have all my apps on my sd card and i have almost 3 GB available on my SD card. What do i do? Do i have to change something or do I have to root the phone?
 
Internal storage is the issue. 1gb is not a lot and even tho your apps are saved to the SD card, there is still apart of it on the phone. You can clear out SMS, pics, and media. Disable apps your not using in the app manager in settings.
