Help Lag - can't take it anymore

My lag actually seems worse since installing Froyo. I've tried everything I know short of rooting it: uninstalling everything, clearing all the available memory... am I missing something?

My next step is to root the phone. I know there are a lot of proponents of this, so I'll ask:

Is there any reason I shouldn't, outside of voiding the device warranty?

**edited to add: it's not just the lag. The phone "app" is lousy, I am constantly getting "no network connectivity" error messages, the email client blows, the google search engine will accept 2 characters, then freeze up for about 10 seconds before catching up, and the Swype dictionary is complete garbage.

Yes, Serendipity.

No, and...

1. Don't worry about the warranty.
2. Serendipity (if you choose to flash a custom ROM to deal with your device's other maladies) incorporates root functionality.

Thanks Jack. I always appreciate your feedback.

I may be talking over my head, but after posting this last night I read about and feel really good about Voodoo. As I understand, it overwrites the kernel and reformats the file tables, which I am fine with. I also seem to understand that many custom ROMs use the Voodoo kernel. Would Serendipity be one of them?

Also, I plan on backing up my phone, of course. But I am wondering what happens to all the information on my phone, specifically the contacts, once I flash it. Will I need to import this information of put it all on my external sd card?

Ok, I'm gonna break this down for super noobness here, I hope you can help.

I've been to CapFaq; I practically live there. From what I can tell, ATT has highjacked OneClick and z4 doesn't work for everyone.

I have crawled the XDA forums, and although they feel they are being helpful, most of the talk is revolving around the latest ROM build. At this point, I just want a reliable way to root my phone and move forward from there.

I am running the ATT Froyo update, everything on my phone is bare bones stock (outside of some apps.) Is there any danger in TRYING either the z4 or OneClick method, that is to say, will just trying possibly brick the phone?

Also, found the answer to my own question regarding voodoo; serendipity uses a different kernel.

Haven't rooted in ages, but this may be of help:

[APP]SuperOneClick v2.1.1 (Finally fixed!) - xda-developers

Once you've rooted, it's important to back up the device. You'll now be able to back up everything. I use Titanium plus MyBackup Pro. Why? There have been occasions when one crapped out and the other came to my rescue. Some things cry out for taking short cuts. Backups are not one of them.

Make sure the backups are housed on the external microSD card. This is critical and accomplishes the following:

1. If the phone's innards are deleted (for whatever reason), the backups are safe.

2. If the phone becomes damaged in any way, the backups are safe and can be restored to another device.

Keep at least two backups in your archive.

Separately, flashing is not for the timid. Homework is required. Lots of it.
