Help Lag in SMS app?

I am using the stock SMS app, and there is a considerable amount of lag in it. I make sure to regularly delete messages so it doesn't get too full, but lately it has been pretty laggy still! Freezes when trying to scroll through my conversations screen, takes a long time to display the names of the people I have convo's with (displays their number for a while until it loads the name), and when I try to write a new message type in a contact, the contact select menu takes a few seconds to come up....

Help?

try killing all your apps and see if that helps
