Help Lag time?

Nategl

Lurker
Does anyone else experience a lag time after pressing a button on the Fascinate? This lag ranges anywhere from 1-3 seconds.

The delay isn't unbearable, but my wife has a Droid Incredible, and I have noticed that her buttons react almost instantaneously.

Any suggestions or thoughts about why this might be occurring?

Thanks for any and all help.

My Fascinate had some physical button issues and liked to hang/lag, to the point I started rebooting it once every couple of days. Swapped the phone out and 2nd one has been running great.

the "lag" is a known issue with the samsung galaxy s phones. this is due in large part to samsung deciding (for whatever reason) to use the rfs filesystem.

rfs handles system write speeds poorly (but is somewhat decent with read), long presses, games, web browsing, email etc will thus "lag"

there are ways around this (all involving root and custom kernels) but the best you can do without root is to minimize the number of apps you have installed on your phone and reduce the number of widgets that you use

There is somewhat a lag with a stock fascinate. Most normal users do not notice it and see that it just comes with all the capabilities of being able to run so many things on a phone. But in reality the lag come from the system running a RFS filesystem. This is where, Im not sure if you have heard of it, the voodoo lagfix comes into play. It changes the RFS filesystem to Ext4 filesystem. The Ext4 filesystem is the filesystem that is standard to linux. But this voodoo isnt for everyone. It is not hard to install, but it is important that anyone that wants to run it sudies everything about it to make sure that they can fix it if they were to run inot problems.:D

My suggestion is to download "Zeam" from the market.
I didnt like the default home Twlauncher so i started to use laucherpro and now i am hooked on zeam.
very fast.
Also download in the market "Home switcher"
this will allow you to test out Zeam and Twlauncher(fascinate stock)
Then after two minutes you can figure out a conclusion which home launcher is faster.
hope this can help

So froyo/maintenance update won't help make the phone snappier?

froyo *may* help things out a bit as the .32 kernel is *supposed* to perform better...but really as long as the file system is rfs the problem remains....or at least the rfs as presented by samsung

custom rfs kernels for the root crowd are signfiicantly better as well

Part of the reason why I'm nervous to root and flash or install things like voodoo is because I'm mad ignorant to the process. The instructions don't really shed light on the questions I'd want to ask too :-/...

but, just out of sheer curiosity, if I were to JUST install the voodoo Kernel to get rid of this lag... would I have to get rid of it when the froyo update is pushed or whatever this MR2 one is? Would it void my warranty?

1. root voids your warranty with verizon
2. clockwork recovery (which is used to install roms/kernels) will block the installation of an ota (but the root crowd doesnt really need otas)
3. depending on the migration from .29 voodoo to .32 voodoo, it might have to be disabled but i dont think so personally

I'm entirely sympathetic to gaw316's concerns. I don't feel knowledgeable enough to root my phone, as the worst thing I can imagine is having to go to the Verizon store with a dead phone and admit that I voided my warranty with no idea of what I'm doing.

The voodoo fix sounds ideal, but I'm even a little uncertain about the implications that such an install would have. As an Apple user for most of my life but a lover of my Android phone, I'm so unfamiliar with the language of the OS (kernels, rfs, roms, etc.) that I'm unsure of where to begin.

so it would be possible to root, install those kernels, and still be able to have ota updates pushed to my phone and not trade off any of the functionality of my phone as is?

well.....it is possible to root, install clockwork recovery....flash voodoo....remove clockwork recovery....accept the ota.....and *try* to install it

however, the issue is that any ota from verizon will include a kernel...and that kernel is 100% going to be an rfs kernel...and you cant flash rfs on top of (ext4) voodoo

so no matter what if you absolutely wanted to take the ota (and again otas are riskier imo than odin/cwr upgrades) then you would have to go back to the stock (or at least an rfs) kernel and remove cwr

Thanks for the help man.. I'm assuming I'd be able to install all the goodies of the ota update manually minus the rfs kernel?

Also.. I can still return the phone in a cpl weeks to best buy.. I'd assume id be able to flash back to stock if I properly backed up

you mean install it the upgrade from one of the devs? yeah we have the dl09 odin package courtesy of adrynalyne...technically you dont have to be rooted for it...just need the samsung drivers, odin, and the file...but i believe it will wipe all of your data (not your sdcard) i havent flashed it so im not sure

but taking to the ota with a voodoo kernel will soft brick your phone...and you d have to odin it (assuming the ota doesnt change your bootloader)

you can just flash the dio1 all in one package and that will remove root, and clockwork recovery and essentially restore the phone to stock

Thanks man.. I switched over from the inc and I love the hardware.. Just not the firmware I guess. I appreciate all the help.. Knowing that there's a chance to turn back is a lot more encouraging
