Laptop connection

Hello everyone.
Can anyone describe the method to connect my Desire to my laptop? I have connected the charger usb to both and then had a message to insert the disc that came with the phone which i can't recall ever having? Consequently it fails to connect because of the lack of driver. Windows found no solution

Pull down the notification area on the phone screen and select "Disk Drive" in the USB connection type notification.

Then install HTC sync. If you cant get it off your SD card (that came with the phone), download it
