largest ext hdd useable?

The Max file size for a fat32 file is 4gb. The Max drive size is 32gb I think.
so on that premise, it wouldn't work then.

Edit...just found a way to format a 500gb hdd to fat32,so would assume. It would work for a smaller drive.

I just don't want to buy the drive and not be able to use it.

I would think that if the USB port meets spec, than any usb powered HD should be able to pull enough power.

If FAT32 partition size is 32Gigs, than there might be a practical issue.

That would big a big limitation, since any external HD that you would plug in, would likely be used to transfer files from a PC which would probably us NTFS.

I guess we need someone to test it out. I don't have tablet yet so I can't even test it. Maybe I need to drag a USB drive over to Best Buy and plug it in and see what happens...
 
I would have to format the drive using a PC first, so formatting it to FAT32 would be no issue.

I am using a WD Passport 500 Gb with mine. I had to use a utility to reformat to FAT32, but it seems to work fine with both Windows PC's and the Acer ATab.

The one limitation I am seeing is in how applications deal with this. For example, Astro sees it an can browse it. However the native android apps don't do a real good job of letting you select what you look at. I assume this will get better with time. Since most others (all?) don't support the USB drive there hasn't been a need for that functionality.

Cool,good to know it will work. It will just be for movies when I travel.
Hopefully vitalplayer (which has played absolutely every file extension i've thrown at it) will recognise the files.
Out of interest,what did you use to format the hdd?
 
You can go to NTFS Support - xda-developers
And download the NTFS program tat a member of that site made. It works I can leave my 500 gig western digital drive in NTFS. There is one trick to make it work at least for me. After you start the program and plug in your drive I have to switch my screen orientation to get to recognize. I don't know why but once I get to recognize it you can move the tablet either way.
