Latest Custom Roms

Which of the 4 are the most reliable? Before I choose one I want to make sure all of my hardware such as all of the buttons, camera etc will work for it.

I kept Fresh on both hero phones, both mine and hers. Modaco was also very stable, those two seem like the two that are most stable...fresh is awesome if you ask me!

OK, I just got my Sprint HTC Hero last week. I've already rooted it, and would like to flash with a custom ROM, preferably Fresh 1.1 or MoDaCo. In reading/searching the many forums here, I'm confused. Most posters simply try to impress other members with their grasp of technical jargon, rather than make their points clear and easy to understand.

My question is this: Can the Sprint HTC Hero (NOT CDMA but the evdo Sprint phone) be modded with a custom ROM? If so, which one? The links I get pointed to refer only to a CDMA Hero.

Sorry if this question has been repeated too much, but after hours of searching, I simply can't find a CLEAR answer.

Modded mine (Sprint HTC Hero)with Fresh and now Modaco and have no problems at all. As a matter of fact the Hero now responds better. Battery life is still to be desired, but I've learned to accept that if you are to fully use all the cool features, battery life will be reduced to nill. That's why I've always invested in a car charger and an extra home charger for work

Peace!!!
:)

You do have a cdma hero if its from Sprint. Make sure you only use roms for the cdma hero.

There is a whole topic dedicated on how to do this at the top of the forums.

CDMA is the type of signal (CDMA or GSM..might be others, but those are the main 2). EVDO is essentially the speed. In Sprint's case, EVDO is basically 3G, while 1x would compare to 2G or EDGE I believe.

If you have the Sprint Hero, you have the CDMA Hero. If you're using Sprint, you're using CDMA. It's that simple.

For information on rooting, I suggest you check out XDA: Hero CDMA - xda-developers

Do your research for a few days, maybe even a couple weeks before rooting. Always make a backup before changing ROM's, and make a backup before you do anything after rooting. Do that, and you'll be good, because you should always be able to reload that backup, but be sure to also copy those backups from your SD card to your computer.

A big thanks for those who replied to my newby question, and thanks for the clarification of what CDMA is, in plain language. I just installed the MoDaCo Custom 2.0 ROM and now my Sprint Hero is crazy fast. Once again, thank you!

This may seem silly but I rooted my phone a couple days ago. deleted all the stock programs I didn't want and then for the heck of it decided to flash to Fresh 1.1 right now.

I've got all backups that are needed from nandroid but I am not seeing a huge difference from the stock interface to the Fresh 1.1 other than some things here and there, the lock screen is nice, and transparent things ..etc. icons.

What is the real advantage to doing this? My phone doesn't feel any faster and all the stuff that I used with the stock rom are the same or work with this rom... sorry if that seems lame but I am just wondering what the biggest advantage of doing this rom was?

did you bother to read the changlog from the rom?????

did you bother to read the changlog from the rom?????

Yep. Read the entire thing. I see all the things that were removed and added such as wireless tethering, but as a whole I think the phone still works pretty much the same as before for me other than a little bit different style of the graphics..

IE: I guess i was under the impression that since everyone thought the stock rom was slow and that the fresh rom was so fast it would be night and day difference for me. That's all.

-Nigel

I also didn't see a big difference in speed. My stock rom was running fine. But I like the ability to change roms, lock screens, Rosies etc.

ok....this may or may not be a series of stupid questions (I hope it's the latter instead of the former):

So, I've been doing a bit of reading on rooting and flashing a custom ROM. It appears that, while there is no clear-cut winner, Fresh 1.1 seems to be a little more heavily favored as the choice to go with.

My original reason for contemplating rooting/flashing was pretty much what everyone else's is: Speed (or lack thereof, smoothness, responsiveness, etc.). I was having issues with the phone running slower than a dog and things just not working right, plus, something was keeping it awake, and thus bleeding my battery dry. I've identified the culprits of all of the problems (SMS Backup was keeping my phone awake at all times, which sucks, because that is a great app, and Lookout Mobile Security was slowing down the whole phone to a crawl) and have since deleted them from my phone. Everything seems to be running hunky-dory right now. The phone moves pretty quickly, responds pretty easily and doesn't really lag at all. However, there are a few issues I still have with the phone that I was curious to see if rooting/flashing to a custom ROM will fix.

1. For whatever reason, my WiFi will not stay connected to my work's wireless router. I don't really have that problem at home or anywhere else I can pick up WiFi, so my suspicion is that it's just the router or the strength of signal. I guess, generally, do any of the custom ROMs increase the WiFi stability (or is this just a router specific issue that is a non-issue for everyone else)?

2. Location Updating: I've noticed that while driving through different towns, I can have my phone awake on the home screen and the HTC Clock and Weather widgets will not "follow my location". I guess I don't expect it to change with every different town I cross, but there have been times where I've passed through 8 different towns, gotten to my destination, had the phone's home screen with the widgets up for a good 5 minutes and it still doesn't update. Do any of the ROMs fix any location issues?

3. GPS: I've noticed quite a few people on here post that their GPS is screwy. I've really only noticed it with Google Maps, but there are times where it places me 3 states over from where I am. Are there any improvements there?

4. Radio/Phone Signal: I don't know if it's my particular hardware, but in certain areas where I should be getting, and have gotten with different phones, a great signal, I'm getting marginal signal. Like, 1 or 2 bars. I've actually roamed quite a few times in my office building, where that has never happened with my previous Sprint phones. I live in the 2nd largest city in Illinois (besides Chicago), so it's not like I'm out in the sticks. I should have great coverage everywhere. Any improvements here?

5. Web Browser/Data Speeds: The reason I asked the above question is because I've seen a few people state that their web browsing/data transfer speeds have increased while on the EVDO signal. If this is possible, I'm thinking there may be an improvement in the phone signal as well. Regardless, are the data speeds and web browsing, in fact, speedier with custom ROMS? If so, how is that possible (I'm just more curious than anything).

6. Certain Functions not working?: I've read quite a bit on the different ROMS, and to be honest, it's a bit too much info. I'm quite confused. Would I be correct in my assumption that MoDaCo's ROM and Fresh 1.1 are non-beta ROMS? In other words, flashing to either one of those, as opposed to other beta ROMS, does not mean sacrificing standard operations? I've read that certain ROMS work, for the most part, but certain things, such as the camera or visual voicemail, don't currently work. Is everything operational w/ Fresh 1.1 and Modaco? Are all the HTC SenseUI functions (Facebook integration, Contact integration w/ texts and emails, etc) still operational?

Guys, I sincerly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read all of this and the effort to respond. I like to think of myself as quite informed on this stuff, and while I realize that this topic has been covered at length, I don't think I've seen these particular questions asked or addressed.

Again, I'm just trying to determine if rooting is for me. Right now my phone seems to be functioning very nicely and if there is no real advantage to do so over what I have, I don't want to risk screwing anything up.

My other concern, although after reading, I think it's moot, is that once 2.1 is released, I'd like to be able to update to that OTA. Based on what I've found out through research, that's nothing more than flashing back to the Stock RUU and updating through the Settings menu. My assumption is that doing this step, however, would require a complete wipe of all info/settings on the phone since you'd be going back to stock as opposed to a Nandroid backup.

Again guys/gals, thanks in advance for any info.

sounds to be router specific

check your setting on the clock

maybe your building is blocking signal or catching/causing interference

that all deals with the signal your getting from the towers nothing with roms

im running fresh 1.1 right now and everything works perfect

yes when you run the RUU it will wipe everything like if you pulled the phone outta the box

anytime

Could this be because I've got all three location settings checked (Use Wireless Networks, Location Setting, Enable GPS Settings) and always have GPS on?

I've seen some people state that they've seen faster browser speeds. Has the browser been optimized? I've seen something about ad-less browsing, but don't know what that is or does.

i have all three on mine checked too and gps is always on ....alot of the apk have been optimized the browser was optimized but the patch that fixes flash un-optimizes it. the ad less browsing is a customized HOSTS file that blocks domains from known bad or ad sites. directs them to localhost so that they don't show

TTG v0.1.6 ROM -
[ROM] 01/17/10 | TTG CDMA Hero rom | v0.1.6 - PPCGeeks

I think this was just added a few days ago. Correct me if I'm wrong.

How is the TTG ROM any better/worse than Freshhh 1.1?

I think it'd be cool if we could flash a Windows Mobile ROM just to play with it.

This rom was made to fill the gap between the MCR 1.1, obelisk 1.3, and fresh 1.1 roms. I had trouble upgrading to the unofficial 1.3 from the MCR 1.1 and I didn't not like the visual changes in the fresh rom. I was just making this for me personally but figured some of you guy might appreciate it.

I have optimized via PNG shrinking, zipaligning, and bloatware removal in this rom as much as I believe is necessary. This rom has been personally tested by me to flash over the stock 1.56.651.2, Fresh 1.0 and 1.1, unofficial MoDaCo 1.3a, and MoDaCo 2.0 without wiping. Warning: flashing from Fresh 1.1 and 1.0 may leave some of the fresh files on your phone aka you may notice stuff is still "fresh".

Last but not least, always do I nandroid backup before you install this rom or any addon. I take no responsibility for any damage done to your phone.

Hah.. I should read more.

I just flashed the MaDaCo 2.0 ROM and the market was missing... Anyone know how to get it back? I'd like to play with this ROM but would kinda like to keep the market... :/

I dig Fresh, especially when I first got it! I couldn't believe how FAST it was compared to...well you know. But then I noticed my graphics weren't as clear, pictures looked grainier - the resolution on everything seemed a lot less than prior... I did have photos as my wallpaper, but didn't look so slick after I rooted, rom'd and freshed, so I went back to a pattern...

Also, when I'm in Bluetooth, whether I'm using a headset or not, everything slows to a CRAWL - email, texts, whatever... turn the bluetooth button off its back zooming fast again... This kinda sucked cause I just bought a bluetooth stereo headset I was planning on using when I run, but the music was just so slow (but plug in a regular headset, it works fine)...

I did notice the music was a lot slower in the Bluetooth headset prior to Fresh, but at least before I freshed - the other programs didn't seem to lag so much when I was in Bluetooth mode...

I don't know, maybe its just me, I'm kinda new to this, trying to make it all work...

But definitely thinking of MaDaCo...

that's strange. I recall reading about problematic bluetooth memory loss, MONTHS ago, but the phone slowing down and if I understand you correctly, the music playback as well? That's not right, you should check all your components on this one.
