Laughable Bit About iOS5

Thanks for the move. I'm only active over in the D3 area, so it didn't really occur to me! ;)

As we all probably know, THEY made a newer phone that just about caught up with what we currently have modded and are extremely satisfied with. You know...dual core, 8MP cam, 1080p video...the smartphone norm. Well, this just came up on my FB news feed and I chuckled, especially coming from a girl. They're not usually the most likely to compare phones and their OS's (IMHO). I'm glad that our OTA's are OTA and don't take 2 hours to download, much less install.

Now...take a moment to admire my sloppy, careless Paint skills.

Fortunately, that isn't MY iPhone, computer, or internet. I just came across this on FB.

EDIT: Two more friends have posted complaining about 6 and 9hr DL times on iOS5. Either you have incredible internet (fiber optics?) or the servers are bombarded. Maybe they're using a limited college network?

Amidst all the buzz on my Twitter and FB about friends getting (or trying to get) iOS 5, I decided to look into it to see what's so new and awesome. They're raving about it. So I went here and found a good bit of it comical...as an Android user myself.

You get all kinds of notifications on your iOS device: new email, texts, friend requests, and more. With Notification Center, you can keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Center.

Been there, modded that.

iOS 5 makes it even easier to tweet from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Sign in once in Settings, and suddenly you can tweet directly from Safari, Photos, Camera, YouTube, or Maps.

You mean like press Menu then Share?!?

Want to mention or @reply to a friend? Contacts applies your friends’ Twitter usernames and profile pictures. So you can start typing a name and iOS 5 does the rest.

Sync'd contacts?!?

With iOS 5, you no longer need a computer to own an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Activate and set up your device wirelessly, right out of the box. Download free iOS software updates directly on your device.

You mean an OTA. Gasp.

All in all, I feel like the iPhone 4s was merely a catch up to the Android world in terms of camera, CPU, and, well, software. :| (My "not too impressed" face, didn't live up to the hype I saw online. Glad I went Android out of the gates.)

So when does iOS go open source so Apple users can be liberated to do what they want?

Perhaps their servers are bogged down because millions of users are trying to DL the stuff at the same time? Android users in many cases are just as crazy when it comes to a new update.

AND . . . the Android updates are smaller are they not? Not sure any Android update is 350+MB

Not at all sure of your point.

Screenshot, why don't you use it.

Agree with Bob might be the servers and/or the MB of the update.

Give me a break. Are you an Apple hater by any chance?

Everything he's stated is is the truth... o.O

And how they copied the Android notification system... well all you have to do is look at iOS5 and see for yourself. Pull down drawer.. swipe to clear notification.. that doesn't scream COPIED COPIED to you?

It's a tougher call than that. It's more complicated than the result of user experience ("pull down the drawer, swipe to clear," etc).

If it were that strict, wrt what one manufacturer of a product provides and another manufacturer seeks to provide along the same or similar lines, then there would only be one automobile brand with an automatic transmission, or one brand of just about anything mechanical, electrical, etc we use.

Which means they copied someone else.. lol. To me, it is that simple. In fact, if they were as litigation happy back then as they are today, there probably only would be one manufacturer of vehicle unless they licensed their patents.

I think it's great that Apple gave iOS what we Android users might take for granted. Now they can have a better smartphone experience.

I've used a Droid 3, and it's camera and video capture aren't anywhere near as good as the iPhone 4's, let alone the 4S. When it comes to the camera specs just don't equal good quality. I'm just waiting for an Android phone that matches the camera quality of the iPhone. The Galaxy S II's looks pretty good but I have a bad taste in my mouth from Samsung.

Im not picking on you just an observation. I find it amazing how many people keep a camera on a cell phone as a "top priority" despite all the other things they do. Not knocking you i just find it peculiar.

^^ this. A common misconception is that mexapixels make the camera, when in reality the biggest factor is lens quality. I think android needs to slow down on releasing a new phone every month, the quality control is terrible. I love love love the android OS in every way, I just wish every android phone I've gotten and all the ones i've seen come in my store have so many bugs. I'm strongly considering making the switch and sacrificing some of the features I love about android for the build quality and stable software of iOS =/

Agreed. There is no reason for 8 different handsets from the same manufacturer with extremely minor differences when that same amount of time can be spent perfecting 2 or 3 devices that would still cover everyones needs. However on the software side im a fan of the homebrew, but i shouldnt HAVE to rom to correct carrier bloat. (I'm looking at you carrier IQ)

I actually think it is a good thing that Android is offered by so many manufacturers and at different price points with different hardware (screen sizes, keyboard or no, processors, etc.). It gives everyone a chance to find the right phone for them and you don't have one company saying that THIS is the phone for everyone. At the same time, I do have to agree with you guys that a little more time and quality control behind each device would be preferable to people dropping a new handset every other week.

As far as iOS5 goes, I don't think it is a big deal that they copied Android on a few things. Everyone copies everybody else to a certain extent. When Android was in its infancy the prototypes looked a lot like BlackBerries, but that was when RIM was on top of the smartphone game. When the iPhone came out the designs changed to touchscreen devices. I can't honestly say if that was because the market shifted or it was what Google had planned all along, but it is basically what happened. I think it is a good thing that they added these features. Their additions may drive Google to update/improve their own notification system as well as voice capabilities on their phones. Maybe our cloud services will improve because of iCloud, who knows? All I do know is that competition is a good thing.

Well, you made half of my point, the other half being that "copying" is a perception in many many cases, not a legal definition.

The automatic, the hydromatic, the fluid drive, ad infinitum.. all automatic transmissions as compared to the standard stick shift of the day (which had several incarnations, as well).

iOS's drag down notification area may or may not be patent infringement, but it is only a "copy" in the same spirit as the the various incarnations of four wheel drive vehicles. Maybe not, but again, it's a much tougher call than simply saying, "they copied it."

Certainly, lens quality matters. Even within brands, there can be noticeable quality differences. The Biogon on my Superwide was a theoretically perfect lens. It is better than other Hasselblad lens of the same focal length I used on my 500C. Same thing with Leica. There were amazing lenses and good lenses. Kodak manufactured some fine optics and their Ektars stood out, yet EK also made some less than stellar optics as well.

I think if manufacturers were interested in building a truly amazing camera phone, the costs would be high. Hell, they do not (?) even provide a way to mount the phone on a tripod, and a tripod, regardless of shutter speed makes a difference. Not to mention, better image control.

I think the manufacturer needs to meet a price point so the customer will buy and the customer likely does not care about ultra-high quality if it means thinking about what great images demand hardware wise.

Lets turn it a bit and I'll ask this: can you state, without any possible doubt, that the devs that created Android were not, in any way, influenced by someone else? Is Android absolutely new, offering features never, ever seen before?

Face facts . . everything starts somewhere else, and there is no doubt that many Android developers get ideas from other places. This issue is not the crime of the century; it is normal and been there done that.

We (palm) manufactured devices that provided web access from portable devices along with email before the iPhone arrived so Apple "Stole" from us. Perhaps we stole from Newton and Newton came from the HP Palmtops or CE Devices which came from other places?

Silly to argue about and debate and worry and fret so. My crap works and next year, it will be faster and more powerful and cost me less.

Well, I wouldn't call it a "top priority" per say, but I don't like carrying around a lot of gadgets so I'd like it if my phone could be good enough to capture some of the things I may run across. The iPhone 4's camera is that good in my opinion, and from what I've read and seen so far the 4S' camera is stellar. I'm tired of a lot of manufacturers putting the specs above the actual quality of the components.

Agreed not top priority, just nice to have one. I am getting IOS 5 on my touch tomorrow, I will see if it's hype is really that great.
