Root LCD Density

Have any of your guys ever messed with this? I started playing around with it yesterday. It basically makes your screen look like it has a higher resolution and will make everything smaller so you can fit more on your screen. The default LCD Density for the Evo is 240, and I dropped down to 200 and really like the results. This can be accomplished with an app called ROM Toolbox (it's free). Just open ROM Toolbox, slide over to the "Performance" tab, click on build.prop tweaks and it's your first option. Just save and your phone will reboot. Here's a photo of my current setup:

definitely worth a look... how about a "before and after" screenie...

Saw an article about it over on AP a little while ago. It looked interesting, but never actually gave it a go.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought about changing my lcd density to 200. So I went into rom toolbox and changed it, rebooted and was getting force closes all over the place, problems with widgets loading, couldn't open rom toobox anymore...went into recovery, wiped cache/dalvik cache, reboot, same issue....so I thought I would go into recovery and go back to my nandroid made 2 days ago....no soap..wouldn't let me flash nandroid...wouldn't even let me flash the 2 older nandroids....now I'm screwed cuz I wiped everything before going to my nands!!!! NOW WHAT???

Edit...I'm a dumass...tried to flash the backup...(flash from zip on sd card)
didnt choose nandroid backup....nevermind...
Scared me bigtime for minute.

Edit again..restored to good nand backup and everything was fine....changed some things (not lcd density!!)..and made another nand backup...rebooted , and bam! force closes all over the place, problems with widgets etc...wtf?...
going back to restore with known good nand a minute and see what happens..I'm thinking the thing I changed was in rom toolbox, downloaded zipalign to run at boot...??? maybe?

That's weird. I never had any issues changing density

Yeah, who knows...just glad I had a good backup...btw, I restored to good nand, changed minor things except the zipalign script in rom toolbox...made a new backup nand, rebooted and now all is well..
I wonder if I changed lcd density from root explorer build.prop instead of rom toolbox build.prop, it would work...
Not tonight tho...maybe later...too much phone drama tonight.:)

LCD density is one of the options in Deck's PB 5 build.

I didn't try it but saw the option in settings.

I've messed with mine a bit. 200 was lowest i went. U need the paid version of rom toolbox. An "easier" way is to find the lcd line in build.prop and just change it there!

It will!

I do have the paid version...and the easier way you state is what I am thinking about doing...maybe I won't have issues

Edit: couldn't wait..went into root explorer../system/build.prop..open with text editor..scrolled down to ro.lcd density something or other, changed from 240 to 200 and, YES! it works...:D

Now why would editing from rom toolbox cause issues and not from root explorer?

So I got my screen res to work and everything is smaller and thats good, however, I cannot fit anything more on my screen...I have 4x4 layout...looking at your screenies, looks like you went from 4x4 layout to 5x5 layout...how? just by changing density? or is there something more I'm missing?

He's using what looks like ADW EX Launcher where you can change the homescreen to 5x5

Yeah that's exactly what I was using. Sense looks messed up when you mess with your density unless I suppose you can find a mod to make it look normal. Even some of the apps, like the dialer, are a little "off". I ended up just going back to stock density because I was tired of not getting market updates. When you change your density, you'll find that some apps will state that they are not compatible with your device. So you need to switch back to stock density in order to get updates. Again, that's just with some apps...some of the were no hassle with the decreased density.
