Help LCD screen broke, advice needed...

I never thought I have to return my MT but I picked up my phone from the table, look at the screen... LCD broke . No contact, no cracks, didn't get wet. Phone works if i can hit the right buttons but everythng on the screen flickers and fades to black. Notice the wavy line in the pic anyone know what that is?

My question is I got this off Ebay used back in Oct, no receipt, can I still get a free replacement? how long does it take? and what kind of questions do they ask? i wonder if i should activate my dumb phone because the plan changes in two days  If I qualify for the replacement can I do it while the phone is unactivated?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm pretty sure you can get a replacement. The Triumph hasn't even been out a year, so everyone is still covered under the one year warranty. I've gotten three replacements and they were all shipped overnight. Basically, just tell them that your screen isn't working and explain how it happened and the nature of the damage, etc. It's not necessary to mention where you bought your phone (mine was from Radioshack and I got it replaced). Don't activate your other phone though, the triumph has to be active when you ask for a replacement I believe.

Marialle, thanks.

I called VM, there are no replacements in stock so I'm on a 5-7 day wait list. FWIW they did not ask where I got the phone. With all the luck people are having with they refurbs I'm not holding my breath :D.

Tech support said activation is not needed for the swap so they actually and voluntarly  activated my old phone free of charge :eek: (watch me get $10 subtracted from my account ;) tomorrow)

Anyhow I'll update this thread if anything unexpected or good happens. Otherwise if anyone have a theory on how my LCD broke up for no reason chime in. The phone works fine, I just can't see what I'm touching... but thanks to my Spidey Sense I can still unlock and answer calls :D

pressure.

gorilla glass will bend very far without snapping. of course its easy to snap it if you throw a sharp tipped object directly into the glass.

but anything the size of a fingertip or larger will just push the glass inwards.

what it seems like happened is something pushed in and either A. broke the LCD under the glass right there.

or B. bent the LCD panel, causing internal pressure, which eventually left it as a time bomb, snapping at some random moment, probably due to temperature, cooling from the heat produced inside the phone.

I've seen motorcycle engines built with stresses in the metal casing of the blocks show no signs of damage until the first heat cycle, when its cooling, the different materials cool at different rates, sometimes with disastrous results. ive even seen motors run for years without getting hot enough to cause it.

of course, im no sherlock holmes. those are just guesses.

What you are saying sounds likely. What I can't understand is why so many people are having problems like that... I am pressing up against carts with my phone in my pocket all day and my screen is still in perfect condition. Its strange.

same here.

actually my phone had to endure my friend who thinks all touch screens work by pressure. i thought she was going to break my glass, she keeps her nails filed sharp. so scary watching that happen to your phone in someone elses hands.

I did get two fairly deep circular scratches right in the center of the screen. i dont have any protectors on it. so im SOL for fixing it. kind of annoying too.

I never want to meet that friend of yours in a dark alley ! I hate scratches too. They annoy me so badly. I once dropped my OV while riding my bike (bicycle not a motorcycle) and it hit the asphalt and slid (all with no screen protector) surprisingly it didn't get scratched hardly at all but there still was that annoying little scratch.

From the looks of the lcd it looks like there is a pressure spot and it cracked. And the lines kinda make me think a wire broke somewhere...

shmacks, you're pressure theory is sound. Carrying 4.1 sheet of glass in a pant pocket etc... not the best idea, especially the MT being so thin you forget it's there. Can't imagine what's up with 4.5". Either way, VM can't wait for MT's first birthday... expiring warranties :D

marc, odd pressure spot for sure, matches my finger but I rarely touch that spot  and it's close to the sides = more strength.

Now a question to those that got reburbished replacements. What exactly are they? repaired broke phones? how bad was the previous damage that made it repairable, I can't imagine much.

Once I get my MT I'm going back to the holster. Up until now I used a 2 piece hard case, made the MT bulkier which I liked but i always felt uneasy about the big glass exposed. I made an earlier topic about keeping the MT for 3 years - barely made it 3 months
