Leaked 2.1 or Waiting for OTA?

Simple question..... Reading other forums and no one has a good answer. Some new piece of info comes out everyday so I figured I would ask.
 
A modest proposal to VZW/HTC:

With 3 days left in Q1, it's time to 'shoot the engineers and ship the product'. The leaked images have already convinced people that a 'good enough' version was ready over a month ago. Any further delay to clean up a few minor issues will cause more harm than good.

"A good plan implemented today is better than a perfect plan implemented tomorrow."

I disagree. I prefer that they get it right and let the default users stay at a supported 1.5 than push out an update that causes a ton of support calls for the great majority of Eris users who do not check forums like this one, rather than try to meet an artificial "deadline" set months ago just for the sake of meeting a deadline. I'd rather they wait as long as necessary to get it supportable than give us the Android version of Vista. If it's days, weeks, or even a few months "late", then so be it.

If you are posting on this forum, I assume that you have the ability to get the leaked update if you really want it now.

Of course I can update, but I'm not complaining about my situation (I have unlimited patience;).
As a long-time software QA pro, I'm referring to the very real impact that missed deadlines have on the public's perception of a company and its products. If there's a genuine show-stopper at this late date, the best course of action is to notify the customers, outline the current steps to correct it, and announce a new tentative ship date.
The real problem is that a high-quality ROM image has been out in the wild for some time now and the original deadline is upon us with no official word about the update status. This information gap can only leave a bad taste.

I would say that the final build is ready and waiting for upload to the OTA servers as we speak. 1.5 has as many bugs as 2.1. Try Youtube lately?

Nah.. no it doesn't; 2.1 has issues reported in these forums that 1.5 has never had, at least not in my Eris.

And YouTube videos work fine on my 1.5, I watch sports and comedy videos there nearly every day, although the app is not necessary, just go to the website, www.youtube.com.

But I do agree with you about the OTA coming. ;)

Equally, 1.5 had bugs that 2.1 has fixed. Plus my battery life is fixed, new versions of programs work better, Market is better, etc. For argument sake, let's say the leak was actually the OTA, ok? Considering all the folks that love 2.1 and the reports in this forum, would you say that 1.5 was more stable or that people should stick with 1.5? Forgetting the "official" release moniker. Last question, would you update if it were official?
 
As a side note, yesterday my battery started dropping dead and it hasn't done that since leak #1. So I rebooted my phone and it's now back to normal. Gmail wasn't syncing either and now it is. So a reboot once in a while might be prudent if things get hung up.
 
I restart my phone at least once a week...just like my laptop...the Droid Eris is a computer that also happens to be a phone lol...gotta reboot occasionally or else performance starts to suffer.

Totally agree. Should be in the "tips and tricks" section. As a network admin I always tell my users to reboot before they call support.
 
I purchased my device with official currency from an official Verizon store.

The official updates are deserved by me to the extent that the company announces their offering of them, at most.

All else is intriguing, interesting and useful to the community in slightly more than an entertaining sort of way, in my opinion; the leaks are a service to us all in that sense.

As long as I keep reading stuff like this with the use of the Eris as a phone with 2.1 installed, I do, in fact, hope that Verizon and HTC holds off until they get that solved. I can't imagine that Verizon would let this version go live with an issue like that unsolved (though, of course, I could be wrong.) It's one thing for a minor app like YouTube to be broken; it's quite another for the phone function to be screwy.

Rumor is that the Droid is finally starting a slow rollout of 2.1 today. That's probably a good sign for the eris; I can't believe that Verizon would have allowed the Eris to be sold with a higher Android version that their flagship Android phone. I'm hoping that they start updating in a couple of weeks (assuming that they have a 2.1 that isn't buggy.)

I've always assumed that VZW would not update the Eris before the Droid. I even had a mgr tell me the same (though you know what liars they can be). ;)
